deer.jpg Went to help and friend cull some junk deer from their property....I actually took my 15 year old as my trigger man. 2 shots two kills! To say he was happy is putting it mildly.

From a yet non-hunter, what is a 'junk' deer.
Deer that, because of genetics, will never develop good racks. Older deer that only have 6 points or less. Even some 8 pointers are culls. Some have a few points on one side and a spike on the other. Landowners dont want these bucks reproducing...they want the ones with great racks reproducing. Owners of large parcels of land can get state permits to balance out the ratio or bucks to does. So many times alot of does need to be harvested.

Great shooting and a great use of time with your boy.

Congratulations and I'm betting your looking forward to making up something with some of that venison!

Thanks Jeff. It is quality time, sitting in a blind with your son telling him what to look for and how to age a deer or count the points or pick the one to shoot and the one to leave for next year.
He has to clean whatever he kills so he gets to learn the not so fun side of it as well.
The venison went to Granzine's and should be back soon. Venison Chili is first up and the some Chicken fried steaks, backstrap and whatever else I can think up. Also have some 50/50 pork-venison sausage being made.
