This is why I didn't stay in California after my military term was up. Governor Schwarzenegger, you're awesome at pumping iron, making movies, and cracking jokes- and that's about it.

There's a chart for shotguns, too. And the gun restrictions are really only the tip of the iceberg there. Having to run a loaded emissions test (they put sniffer on your car and run it on a dyno), plus the fuel tank pressure test, plus the visual inspection (don't modify your engine in CA) all every two years so you can pay the way overpriced registration. And you should see where you pay those registrations... the DMV there is hell.

I knew it was time to leave when they made illegal to put new incandescent fixtures in your own home. The building permits required any fixtures removed be replaced with florescent. But what really opened my eyes was the regulation that would have required you to put a remote-controlled thermostat in your home to get a building permit. Oh, and in CA, any kind of renovation work at all requires a building permit.

My neighbor there had a tree in his yard that was going to start damaging the house I was living in. The roots were under the foundation and starting to heave it up. It was already damaging the fence line and was just not a good deal for either of us. He tried to get a permit to cut it down (I can't imagine needing government permission to cut my own tree down) and was denied because the tree was too old. So he started pruning it. Pruned that son of a bitch back into the ground eventually. If I'd been in his shoes, I could have wound up in jail because until he told me about it I had no idea that there could be a permit required to cut a tree down!

Right after I escaped, they tacked a 5% "surcharge" on the state income tax you paid them. That's right, they taxed the income tax you paid them! IIRC, this year it's a 15% income tax tax (they call it a surcharge, but it's a tax tax). What kind of place taxes the tax you pay them!?

And all this is still just the beginning of understanding the madness that is California. The state is busy sticking its nose into every aspect of your life and telling you what you can't do.

After I moved back to TX they kept sending me letters in the mail saying I was behind two years on state income tax. Um, I was never a resident of that state. I tried to call and explain this but got call-parked into the twilight zone. After that the letters went straight to the trash and eventually stopped coming.

I think it was a lame attempt to scare people into giving them money they don't legally deserve to try to get their bankrupt government back on track. Good luck with that, and that's a pretty low move to pull on veterans.

I'm never going back to that Hell so if they want me in jail they're going to have to extradite.

Yeah, I've heard of other people having that problem, too. I've also heard of the CA DMV going after people for vehicle registration fees after they've been a non-resident for several years.

My wife had a bank account before we met that her grandfather opened for her and about five years ago we tried to what little money that was in it out. California took the money and all the interest because we where not using it.

I agree, 40 years ago Chicago was off by itself in Illinois. It was crazy but it was Chicago and 60 miles away we lived life on the farm milking, raiseing corn, beef and doing 4H. I went shooting whenever I wanted. Fast forward in the same county there are less then 10 farms left that milk, crime is terrible, nearly 30 murders a year in the same area 60 miles outside Chicago. Liberals have infested the area, entitlements have taken over and shooting? Well a year ago when I went shooting I had to travel 82 miles south to do so and then the wife and I paid $50 to do it.

Yep moved to Texas, have enough acreage to so some shooting have a little range by the tank and life is good. Texas needs to be careful becasue who'd of thought years ago as I was enjoying the life of a hirded man's kid on the farm that it would be the wasteland it is today.

We're doomed in my opinion, but it'll take time. Population density is only going to increase. And where does most of that happen. Cities and suburbs. Cities will grow. Current suburbs will become city. Current outlying rural area will become suburbs. These people will not grow up shooting. They will not understand the heritage of firearms and freedom. The percentage of population that grows up rural will be smaller. And our gun rights will be lost.

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I believe that is the route we are headed. Of course, that is assuming our society doesn't implode because of the financial chaos our system is in. Then all bets are off.

In my government class my wonderful admittedly socialist professor asked the students how many of them believed they have a right to have a gun. Out of roughly 30 students, two raised their hands. I accounted for half of the vote.

Our gun rights will not be lost if those of us who have them also have the balls to use them when necessary. Boston T. Party once wrote, "Remember, folks- when they come to take your guns, you have only one last chance to use them."

California has had its Hey-day. Smart folks have been evacuating for decades. It's all over but the crying out there. Yuma, AZ would make an excellent boat launch site for the Pacific.

CA thinks it is the "center of gravity" for the U.S., and the residents of the other 49 states should just grab a bucket and help bail out their boat. No thank you.

CA should legalize all drugs, and become the drug capitol of the world. Then they could all stay "high" while funding their Maoist utopia.

To give you a view of a different type of professor, in my finance, economics, and business statistics classes at a private university in Austin, I pull out my NRA Benefactor Membership card, my TSRA Life Member card, and my SAF annual membership card, and show them to my class. And, our New Testament/Greek professor is a regular at Eagle Peak, or he used to be before he developed some health problems. They also know that I favor CHL on campus, especially since our new campus is on 620 in far west Austin, and there are feral hogs on the nature preserve that is part of the property. Those things scare me more than most things in Texas.

In fairness, I am probably in the minority among our faculty; although, we do have several other faculty members who are avid hunters.

I too lived in California until about 2 months ago. My sister inlaw became ill and asked if we we would come and help her here in Austin. I should have moved here years ago. I know Austin is not the most liberal city in the state but it makes Calif. look like Hadies!!!!. Once I tansfered my C&R here I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Was able to buy some gun that weren't allowed in Calif. Can't hardly wait til residency takes effect and I'll be able to purchase guns without 10 day waiting period and guns that are prohibited there.....

I had all but forgotten about that. They did the same thing to me back in the late 90's after I came back home! Bastards!
