I recently picked up a Marlin lever in 45-70 and am looking at ammo types. I would like to be able to get some off the shelf locally, but really want the 405 grain bullet. I know the leverevolution is available locally, but it comes in I think either 250 or 300gn. I found online the Privi Partisan for around $16 a box online for the 405 grain semi jacketed HP. Tempted to just order a case of that. Anyone have any experience with it?

Remington or Black Hills have a 405 grain load. Just hope you are not recoil shy....

Most of your factory loaded ammo, Remington, Winchester Super X, Black Hills etc. will be loaded to the old black powder specs because there are so many of the old trap door rifles still in circulation. If you're looking for hotter factory ammo, you can try Hornady Leverevolution, Underwood, and Buffalo Bore. Most people shooting 45-70 are rolling their own to get the most out of them and drastically reduce the price per round. When reloading, most manuals have 3 different 45-70 sections: 45-70 Government for Trapdoors, 45-70 for Lever Actions, and 45-70 for Ruger #1's and Bolt Action rifles. Good luck with it and enjoy your 45-70, it's a really fun and forgiving round to experiment with.

    TXStetson nailed it...

I was going to ask what the intended purpose is for the ammo- there are rounds that are intended for Grizzly bears (Alaskan guide gun) for example...

It's a very versatile cartridge with a wide range of projectiles available

The 325 gr Leverevolution rounds are gnarly accurate out of my 1895s and hammers the piss out everything you put them to

405 gr flat base hard cast w/ SPG lube and 68/70 Gr (by volume) of FFg. Everyone at the range will come to see what made all the smoke.
