    So, one of our dusty old systems in the back office kinda crapped out on me just before 2AM. I called tech support. It was an American (should have been my first clue that it was some ancient shit!). I asked him if it's okay to reboot this IBM PC JR lookin' thing. He says it's okay. So, I go back and do it -m it takes a while, and I eventually have to physically pull the damn plug!

    After I plug it back in, it starts up, and what do I see materialize on the screen, but a bunch of code lines, along with this sentence that catches my eyes: "Starting Windows 98"

    WTF! Seriously?! I know of places that still use DOS (yeah, we're one of those - on our main systems), but c'mon! Is there even still support from MS for this antique?

    Just shows how stable the 98 platform is. Nope, no MS support.

    98 wasnt terrible, then they realized they could really make a bunch mroe money putting out buggy software and having people upgrade every year - year and a half.

    then 98 SE came out.

    lol

    98 was pretty stout in its day. far better to stay on that then upgrade to one of the unstable money maker OS's ME or 2000. only problem is security updates dont come out for it anymore. If you upgrade any peripherals you have for it probably dont have new OS drivers for them.

    We just retired our accounting and workflow computer. Windows 95. It ran 10 hours a day on regular work days since 1995. Dell Dimension 4100. Very few problems, except the floppy drive died. It worked, so I saw no reason to replace it.

    Microsoft already officialy stopped supporting XP, sadly XP has been themost stable OS Microsoft ever created. our company is crawling kicking and screaming to Windows 7 .

    sad

    Not long ago, MS decided to release the source code for Win98 to the public domain. Many issues can be fixed by modifying this part:

    #include "win31.h"
    #include "win95.h"
    #include "evenmore.h"
    #include "oldstuff.h"
    #include "billrulz.h"
    #define INSTALL = HARD

    char make_prog_look_big[1600000];
    void main()
    {
    while(!CRASHED)
    {
    display_copyright_message();
    display_bill_rules_message();
    do_nothing_loop();
    if (first_time_installation)
    {
    make_50_megabyte_swapfile();
    do_nothing_loop();
    totally_screw_up_HPFS_file_system();
    search_and_destroy_the_rest_of_OS/2();
    hang_system();
    }

    write_something(anything);
    display_copyright_message();
    do_nothing_loop();
    do_some_stuff();

    if (still_not_crashed)
    {
    display_copyright_message();
    do_nothing_loop();
    basically_run_windows_3.1();
    do_nothing_loop();
    do_nothing_loop();
    }
    }

    if (detect_cache())
    disable_cache();

    if (fast_cpu())
    {
    set_wait_states(lots);
    set_mouse(speed, very_slow);
    set_mouse(action, jumpy);
    set_mouse(reaction, sometimes);
    }

    /* printf("Welcome to Windows 3.11"); */
    /* printf("Welcome to Windows 95"); */
    printf("Welcome to Windows 98");
    if (system_ok())
    crash(to_dos_prompt)
    else
    system_memory = open("a:\swp0001.swp", O_CREATE);

    while(something)
    {
    sleep(5);
    get_user_input();
    sleep(5);
    act_on_user_input();
    sleep(5);
    }

    Damned all those Windows.

    MS DOS Windows, Windows '95, Windows '98, Millenium Edition, Windows XP, what did I forget?

    I still like to operate on the 8084 platform.

    Running two Seagate ST-2025's.

    Be well.

    They replaced the ancient computers in our offices last year, but they held the new ones for so long that Dell no longer carried that model by the time they were installed. Then they stripped Windows 7 off the computers and put in XP. Now they have announced that they plan to (slowly) reinstall Win 7, but mainly so they can get rid of other software. It's an amazing thing to watch. An electronic Fools Parade.

    So glad I learned Linux years ago! I'm on a decade old laptop running a stripped/custom Ubuntu-based Linux. 100% reliable, does everything I need, cost me 2 hours work and a blank CD.

    I still remember the day I came home from elementary school and my dad surprised us with a new computer with windows 95. I was so excited. It was a big step up from 3.0
