    Howdy all,

I'm looking to purchase my first firearm. I'm thinking I should go with either a .22 rifle or .22 handgun. (Semi-auto or revolver)

I'm really just interested in plinking at the range hence my desire for a .22 (cheap ammo)

Also, I am a poor college student so cheaper is better but I don't want garbage.
I measure US dollars in Ramen Noodles so make sure you can give me an accurate estimate.

    Thanks!

    Andrew

P.S. - If you contributed to my other post thanks for the guidance. I have already found a safe and have discussed this further with my parents as well as my brothers doctor. Still a few minor details to work out but I have decided to move forward.

Look at Marlin 795 which can be had locally for less than $140 and they also have $25 rebate going on (entire year)

For pistol, check Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark series...they are a bit more expensive and close to $400.

    Good luck!

Poink - I'm really liking the Marlin. I had already been looking at the 10/22 but I felt like I would end up spending more than I really wanted to on customizing and making it how I want it. The Marlin seems like a great shooter right out of the box.

If anyone here has a used one for sale I would definitely be interested!

I know there's a Mossberg 702 Plinkster model that resembles an AR-15. I've seen them on Gunbroker.com for $200-250 IIRC. Been tempted to get one myself.

I dunno...I think you are right on with a .22 and for a first gun to be used for fun I think something like this is hard to beat:
Chiappa 1911-22 Factory New in Box : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

I don't have any experience with it and it won't be as nice as a Ruger/Browning, but its cheaper and a clone of one of the most loved platforms - the 1911. For a "fun" gun...I think its pretty cool and you cant beat .22 ammo for economy.

I think Leonidas recently went with the GSG version instead of the Chiappa and probably paid more. You might ask him why, he probably had a good reason.

If you are thinking rifle as opposed to pistol, I agree with Marlin, but I say Model 60, not 795. I had a Model 7000T and loved it. I sold it to do a 10/22 custom build, and I am still not sure I made the right choice. The Marlin was fabulous. I think the 795 has the same action and mags as the 7000T did.

The reason I say go with the model 60 is that the tubular mag holds more and can be loaded faster w/ one of these: GNS-120 - Spee-D-Loader 120 Round Speed Loader Works with all Tube Fed Rifles and .22 Ammo

If its for "fun" the 60 is plenty accurate and more shots plus faster reloads = more fun to me.
