The Rifleman's Journal: Cartridges: Sibling Rivalry: .308 vs. .30-06
Unless I read it wrong, this is basically saying that there's no difference between the two .30 caliber bullets at my preferred hunting distance of up to 500 yards.
However, based on the testimony of some of the more experienced hunters here... my .270 will suffice for longer ranges.
Still, at the end of the day, 30-06 is just chunks a .30" bullet a little faster than the 308 winchester, which only has any meaningful distance at extreme distances (much more than 300 yards). The nice thing about 308 is it's compact size and relatively cheap match ammo avalible.
I don't disagree with you about there being lots of better things out there than 308 winchester for long range, but at relatively short ranges, it doesn't matter that much.
I'm looking to buy a bolt-action in .257 Mag for +300 yds use. With what little I've read, velocity and flatness is pretty decent on the 87 grain SP at 400 yds.
Should I try to get a 26" barrel to keep these specs or settle for a 24"? I like the Weatherby Mark V.
