    Not at night...
My neighbor's front door is 47 yards from mine, so I set up 9 feet inside my door, and aim at their door knob.
I use an El-Cheapo bore mount laser, and it never lets me down, always inside a 10" circle at 50, at the range.
A couple of shots, and I'm ready to move out to 100.
They come with many bore collets, and I've used on .223, .308, 7.62x39, and .45 acp.

I use this type also. I got a Walmart special and it works for me. Just make sure it's seated firmly in the barrel with the correct bushing and follow the directions.

I have had 3 different brands of the ones that slide inside the barrel and every one of them were bent new. Working at Bass Pro, I sighted many customers with a magnetic laser that sits on the front of the muzzle and worked great. Here is one with a reasonable price.

    Old school collimator here also.

Mine is a Simmons, bought about 25 years ago. Hinges on the plastic case have cracked clean through, but the collimator and mandrels are still in good shape.

put it in a sled, remove the bolt, look down the bore at a spot on the target, lock everything down and dial it in with maybe 6 rounds

This. Can also be done on AR's, marlins or Henrys.
yep, I've had good success sighting AR uppers like that. Like good enough to just send it if I had to.

I use the cheapest cartridge laser available on the internet. Handling them very delicately, none have broken yet. They reliably get me on paper at 50 yds, which is all I ask of them.
