A friend of mine says that the difference between Europe and the U.S. is that they were conquered by the sword and we were settled by the gun. Note that there is a difference between conquered and settled as well as the weapon.

There's also the fact that for thousands of years, they were ruled by monarchs who bestowed rights on certain classes of the population, from nobles down to peasants. The US was founded on the radical idea that rights can't be granted or given, they're already ours - so we have a founding document that is intended to restrict the government's ability to infringe on them. Americans aren't subjects, we're citizens.
