Just get a 243 barrel For the 308 AR unless that is YOUR hunting rifle. Gks both have Weatherby 243s, very good and light. My 308AR is a little heavy for hunting but the AR BO is a couple #s lighter.

    Ole Cowboy,

IF it was my lady & I was buying her a 1st deer rifle, it would be a Remington Model 760 in .243 or .308.

Either is suitable for most any TX game out to 150-200M.

Fwiw, I shoot a Model 760 in .300 Savage for everything from coyotes through elk & don't plan to change rifles. = The .300 Savage is about the same "power wise" as the .308.

    just my OPINION, satx

The 760 and 7600 are fun rifles. A few years ago I was looking for one in .308 for my wife, but couldn't find one at a good price so I got her one in .30-06 instead. She loves it. With average over the counter loads the .30-06 doesn't really kick much harder than a .308.

What the OP asked for was suggestions. I gave one. In fact I think it was a good one since I have spent a lot of time with my wife shooting. Hopefully Ole Cowboy can take away some information from my post(s) so that he and his wife can enjoy the sport as much as we have. Care to share?

You need to go spend a little more time with the wife and kid or something rather than racking up 25k in random posts looking for a some e-friends with your odd humor. It just gets old after a while dude.

    CONCUR!

Yes it is mine...looked for a .243 upper but could not find one albeit I know they are out there, but do not think anyone currently is building???

My apologies for not being an E-fudd. I'll try to do a better job of meeting the standards of some random uptight strangers on the Internet.

    Or not.

    TheDan,

NO argument on recoil BUT the .308 is a short action & after being carried afield all day, the short/light/quick .308 carbine is (at least imVho) much handier than the long-action .30-06 "cousin".

Fwiw, I have any number of "deer rifles" from a 1917 "American Enfield" in "GI dress" to a .35 Whelen Improved bolt-action rifle to hunt with BUT it is my 1954-era Model 760 in .300 Savage that most often gets "taken afield". = It is short, light, "fast on target for a second shot" and mounts an old-school Aimpoint red-dot scope.

    just my opinion, satx

Blackhole Weaponry sells .243 barrels. You could build the upper with a Aero AR10 upper receiver. AR10 BCG are not to hard to find either. Here's a link for the barrel:

    .243 Win

Blackhole also makes .260, 7mm08 and other barrels for the AR10 frame. Wish you were in my area and I would loan you one of my 6.8 ARs. Very lightweight AR with a 16" barrel. They make a great AR for hunting deer and hog. The AR10 frame is a little heavy IMO to haul around in the field.

Thanks, I may pursue that on the .243 side, give me some versatility in my AR 10.

I am going to check on that I kinda know some of the folks up at AR and may see if they have an upper.

    Thanks...

Yes it is.... the rifle my son is holding in my avatar is a Ruger in 25.06. He took that ram using Ballistic Silvertips at about 80 or so yds. A buddy of mine lent me that rifle so I take my son hunting...
Just be mindful of which bullet you are using since Nosler makes both varmint and hunting bullets under the ballistic tip/ silver tip lineup.
