Fantasize all you want, but truth is that cattle rustling and horse theiving is how your truck will eventually be discovered in the bottom of a lake or burned down miles from nowhere.

We usually haul the jumpers to the next auction but sometimes a clueless drunk townie tests the frontal impact performance of his vehicle against a cow that’s totally mystified by cars at high speed with brights ablazing. When we drive in the pastures, cows have the right of way.

My wife's high school boyfriend totaled his car hitting a cow at 60 mph one night. He was lucky to walk away. Driving over to her house on Highway 5 outside McKinney, there used to be a narrow railroad trestle over the road, on a turn, out away from all light sources. Seems a solid black cow decided to stand in the road right on the others side of that dark, narrow passage and he didn't see it until his front bumper found it for him. He was lucky to come out of it in one piece. The cow, not so much. The car...well, when she and I were first dating the crumpled wreckage was visible from the road on top of a stack of wrecks behind the fence at a junkyard not far from the scene. Looked like a bomb had hit it.
