I used to 'work' there. I quit when they started whining about not being able to pay me and I should 'volunteer' for the good of the booth owners. food sucks, everything for sale is junk or way overpriced. the people are markedly less friendly than before, parking sucks, and the traffic is hours long in and out horrible even if you swing around 50mi and come in from the north since there's only one way in via 1774. Oh and it's open season for the rainbow flag crowd dress ups. probably no guns allowed these days. I carried several edge weapons instead even in the booth so didn't bother CCW back then. lot's of mud. jmho...

It's called eye candy if your spouse gets angry at that weeeeeell...
My mom used to say my dad was married, not blind or dead. Then she'd make some observation about knowing who he was going home with.

Funny thing is, my dad had the same attitude towards men who leered at mom. He took it as a compliment. Sometimes my mom, I think, wished he'd get just a little jealous or protectively riled.

They were a funny couple sometimes. :)

I'm getting that. I've decided against going. I'm trying to relieve stress, not pile it on by dealing with heavy crowds and heavier traffic.

If I were a couple of decades older I could just reject the whole affair with something on the order of "It's never been the same since they killed off the Wolf Run."

    But I'm not that old.

I'm just old enough to realize that the juice won't be worth the squeeze. I guess I'll have to find another venue to demonstrate to the youngsters that swinging the mallet and ringing the bell on the high striker is a test of skill, not strength. :)
The current owner of the games is a great guy, but runs a crew of misfits. I sold him a spare M203 barrel & some M781's last year.

I like how you say "the" gay dude, like there's only one.

    Way more than one now
When I left there was 2 who were a couple. They became NRA members and had pistols. Ritchie was the flamboyant kind. He made a costume for every weekend + he made the feast mistress a themed hat every weekend. His boyfriend was the company EMT.

They beat the hell out of Daffodil Bill who was around for a long time. Daffodil Bill was stalking the EMT when they lived in Montrose.

There was Frenchy who was the harpsichord player in the feast hall, long ago. Him and Daffodil Bill were an item at one time.

Ritchie & Jeremy were actually very solid employees.

The current owner of the games is a great guy,
The games went to hell when they replaced the girl who sat over the dunk tank. They used to hire a pretty little local high school girl and dress her in a white t-shirt. Only a t-shirt.

Apparently, appreciating youthful beauty from afar was too icky for some folks so they started hiring someone to play a particular character, a bitch who insults everyone within earshot. Bad move and I've held it against them ever since. :)

    Same here.

I organized a camp there every Halloween with my kids and a horde of their friends from 4th grade until they graduated high school.

2017 was my last visit. The commercialism was over the top. The segregated campgrounds for Elites with the new "glamping" rental facilities, private stripper shows, and rock concerts; with us Poors and our hippie drum circle shoved to the back was just too much.

I don't even know if the Society for Creative Anachronism still exists.

Sheesh. I remember going to an SCA house party back when they could hire Walter Koenig to fly out and hang out for the cost of budget airfare, a couple of meals, and a couple of hundred bucks. There were some awfully lean times for the TOS cast between the end of the series and the first movie.

I figured they'd be around forever. But your description of the segregated camping is so completely against the spirit of the festival that you've totally solidified my decision. I won't be going this year and probably never again.

How can an event that was so meaningful to so many people so completely lose its soul?

The changeover from people who ran it because they loved the fun of creating a magical escape from the world to people who looked at it and said "hey, I could make a few bucks doing that!"

Their are those who go for the campground only. The campgrounds were always considered off limits to those who worked the festival. And the campgrounds basically just became another way to make money, if you remember that was for years an orchard set up.

As far as strippers I've been in a few old army tent that had strippers. The campgrounds was also always the realm of the swinger with their wife swapping & orgies. Nothing like a high dollar motorcoach complete with hot tub & stripper pole.

The campgrounds were always notorious for drugs & home brewed Loki. One of the Pharmacy Techs at a store I worked boy friend was a notorious dope dealer at the festival.
