That's the base speed that Grande claims in our area and is what we have. They do have higher tiers that are well past 100MBPS.

60mbps is overkill for most needs.
    6mbps is adequate.

I move large graphic and media files between work at home, work and print shops.
    So speedy is convenient.

It would be a good idea to remember that most ISPs do everything they can to priortize traffic to known speed test sites. That way, their customers get inflated numbers.

OTOH, try setting up an automated download of a TB of data from a third party, like something you get over NNTP. You can time it with a stopwatch with sufficient accuracy to know what sort of real, sustainable download speeds you're actually getting.

The difference between a real download and accessing a speedtest can be starkly, unsettlingly large.

Jealous. All I can get in my area is DSL. On a good day I get 1.46 Mbps down and .395 up. It is actually adequate tho. Compared to Hughs Net, it's a dream.

If you know what to look for, Tests - M-Lab can also give you an idea if your ISP is traffic shaping your speedtest packets.

Many thanks. I'm past the days when I could just walk over to the network guru and ask her questions so I appreciate tools like this even more, nowadays.

Grandecom, upgraded me not bad... old speed was 75 down 7.5 up now 300 down 20 up.

What do you mean by "upgraded you"? What are you paying for your service? We have 50mbps and 5mbps but are bundled with cable TV and a phone line.

Let me know what your getting from them and what they are charging you so I can get them to "upgrade" our service too.

    Thanks

Know the feeling. Once on the bleeding edge, still have a geek itch that needs scratching against a podcast or two each week, but I'm so far behind the curve the past seven years I barely recognize the landscape.

My daughters can truthfully say this is not their father's Internet.

I miss gopher and archie. Crazy thing is, there are still (last I checked) some servers running them but I'm just too lazy to leave my point-n-click stuff behind.

This, I think, is the definition of nostalgia - the memory is better than the reality, even when the reality is still available.
