Remember income tax originally started as a temporary war time measure. Can't recall if it was WWI or WWII.

How about using bailout or stimulus money if it is needed. Some of that cash could actually be used for something worthwhile.

It is funny, we have bases in Germany, Italy, Eastern Europe, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, California (that is a foriegn country isn't it), and more aand no one is hollering about those costs. Germany is NOT a military partner, shut those bases down and use savings to fund the WARFIGHTERS.

Bring them home, hell they aren't supporting anyway, but obama just said we are there until 2017.

    http://ca.reuters.com/article/topNews/idCATRE5AM3E520091125

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will not be in Afghanistan eight years from now, the White House said on Wednesday, as President Barack Obama prepared to explain to Americans next week why he is expanding the war effort.

After months of deliberation and fending off Republican charges that he was dithering on Afghanistan while violence there surged, Obama will address the nation on Tuesday on the way forward in the costly and unpopular eight-year war.

He is expected to announce he is sending about 30,000 more troops as part of a new counterinsurgency strategy that will place greater emphasis on accelerating the training of Afghan security forces so that U.S. soldiers can eventually withdraw.

This move simply illustrates the rampant hypocrisy among the Democrats and other "anti-war" zealots. Their reasons for opposing the war shifts as do the political winds. Originally, it was the immoral, illegal war. Then it was the WMDs... where are they? Then it was the "massive" civilian casualties and the loss of American soldiers; nevermind the fact that the casualty rate is the lowest of any sustained engagement in history.

Now, it's about money. Who cares about the soldiers and civilians who are dying, as long as we (the "poor" people who naturally oppose such an immoral action) don't have to pay for it!

Federal income tax started with Lincoln, so that would be the Cival War Tax.
    Are taxes ever recinded ?

Don't forget the oil, revenge for Bush Sr., etc. There's a new excuse every 6 months.

Ok I've been following this thread so now let me pose this question.
If in fact you knew the monies collected would go directly to the war effort and not siphoned off like so much of the other monies in Washington would you whine and cry.
Would it not be to our future benefit to pay for the war as we go rather than keep borrowing money for China?
    Just asking?

Oh gentleman, this is just the start of odd-ball taxes – You aint seen nothing yet. Below is an illustration of what decades of socialism can generate taxation wise from my former home……and these are just the ones I remember or can quickly look up, there plenty of others. Brace yourselves for things to come:-

TV receiver tax - $450 per house per year
Cell phone tax – 300/year + VAT at 17.5% below
Company provided car tax – 10% of its value annually
Value Added Tax- basically sales tax on everything except food – 17.5%
Gasoline tax – Amounts to 90% of it value – Currently they pay $6.30/US Gal
    Cigarettes - $9.60 / pack of 20 (76% tax)
Average income tax rate is 10% higher than here across the board

I for one still love America !

I suspect we all love America but just hate whats / who's in charge. Sadly I do fear that we are headed into a taxation without representation like has never been seen before in this great land. That you very freaking much Mr.Duhbama!

There was a telecom tax used to fund the Spanish-American War. It stayed on the books for 108 years.

A pesky, century-old tax on your phone bill is finally being put to rest.

The Treasury Department said Thursday that it will no longer collect a 3% federal excise tax on long-distance calls and would refund about $15 billion to taxpayers.

The tax was imposed in 1898 to help pay for the Spanish-American War. It was designed as a tax on wealthy Americans, back when phone service was considered a luxury.

"It's not often you get to kill a tax, particularly one that goes back so far in history," Treasury Secretary John Snow said.
