I come from the generation of photographers who used to wax poetic about the feel of a Leica shutter release in the same way that PPC shooters write odes of joy to impossibly-lightweight, oiled-glass-smooth double-action revolver triggers. I always used to feel slightly second-class with my lowly Nikons - F1, Nikkorex, and many, many more over the years, up to the F5 and D40, with many side trips into other brands and larger formats.

I've given it a good run with thousands of pictures through several autofocus and digital cameras. I conclude that that muscle memory will never go away.

Shutter lag is something to which I will simply never adapt.

Never had the privilege of snapping the shutter on a Leica or anything larger than a 2x3.
I understand it was magnificent and your trigger analogy is spot on.

    I have a drawer full of Nikon 35mm bodies that looks like alphabet soup ... N, D, E, F ....
An F3 isn't worth didley these days.
And how unfortunate ... one could drive nails with it.

I took that approach with my last camera purchase, a Fujifilm X100T. It's nice and takes great pictures. But it's not fast. I need fast.
There a couple camera review sites that will rank cameras based on auto-focus speed and shutter lag, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. At one point Fujifilm was the fastest, but dunno if they still are. At least they are all faster than they used to be

My Minolta 35mm was excellent and I bought it from a professional photographer. She sold it because she cold never get used to the fact that the lenses mounted by turning them a different direction! It bugged her so badly that she sold the outfit. It was deluxe in every way and it served me well.

I set up my Nikon outfit as if I had a blueprint for it. A few days ago, I realized that what I was actually doing was recreating my Minolta set in digital with the Nikon equipment (lenses, bag, flash and all).

As to brand preference, this is my bucket list camera and nothing but Nikon would do. Another neat plan is when I get proficient with this Nikon, I can always buy a more professional digital camera body and use my DX lenses!

I also found out that if I'm using DX lenses (for smaller array camera), on a camera body with a larger array, the circuitry will automatically crop the image to appear as it would in a DX camera. Now, THAT is pretty slick!

It will compensate, but you aren't able to take advantage of the exposure area of the chips.

Changing lenses that are 100% compatible is like going from 35mm SLR to a 120mm Rolieflex.
same image, more exposure area, better saturation.

It's too soon to talk about replacing the Nikon D3300 but I'm always working towards a goal. OK, better Nikon body and suitable correct lenses it is. Hell, it's only money!

OK, this is funny.......I was reading the posts for this thread and my little dog Jake was racked out on the footstool we call the "cube" right beside me. Suddenly, he let loose with a hound dog howl and awoke with a start. He gave me a "What are you looking at?" look and zonked out again. I've seen the boy running in his sleep but this is the first time he was howling in his sleep. At first, I thought that he might be in pain, but he's on his side and snoozing very comfortably. There he is, folks.....Jake the Wonder dog!

I think that I've figured out the nomenclature of the Nikon digital lenses.

DX is the array size inside of the camera. The image coming from the lens must be compatible with the array size.

VR is the vibration reduction system for Nikon. Somehow, it cancels out vibration when the shutter is activated. It works great for telephoto shots where even a little shake will blur the image. I'll research some more out on this.

1: 1.8 (etc) is the maximum aperture opening of the lens.

50mm, 18-55mm, 70-200mm etc is the focal length or multiple focal lengths of the lens,

AF-S is the auto focus, silent wave mode. A little motor inside the lens, focuses for you.

ED is a special coating or preparation on the lens to improve light handing efficiency.

Please feel free to correct if needed.

I love still life photography. I do no like photographing people unless it is part of a larger composition like a crowd at a fair.
My favorite thing to do as of late is experimenting with exposure and shutter speeds. Shooting a star filled night sky and getting light trails is awesome. Also experimenting with different perspectives and shooting black and white and just letting the lighting speak for itself.

I remember a period like that. I was once in love with shooting landscapes in pitch dark conditions. I'd open the shutter then hike around with a large strobe (affordable strobes with built-in "electric eyes" were still fairly new back then) and flash the parts of the landscape I wanted to appear on film. After long enough that I began to worry about reciprocity failure, I'd return to the camera and close the shutter.

I had some stunning successes and some completely wasted nights when I was a teenager.

Of course, I could say exactly the same thing in other contexts, too. :)

Life was fun back when I had no idea what I was doing. I try to apply the same principle to today. It's tougher but worth the effort.

My telephoto lens finally arrived and I've been having fun with it. It's a Nikon 55-200 zoom with auto focus and Vibration reduction. It wasn't too expensive and it really works great!

I took some pictures at the 55 mm focal length and shot the same objects at the 200mm setting. That lens can really crank the image in!

Just a tip that may or may not be helpful to you.

I found when shooting in low light the slight movement caused when pressing the shutter button would blur an otherwise good picture even with a tripod, especially with a telephoto lens.

Setting a short timer on the shutter so you can press it and then let the camera take the picture a couple seconds later was the difference between a good picture and a blurry mess.

Not needed if you have the remote shutter button.

Roger, with all this hi-tech photo stuff you're doing, do you have any plans to rectify your picture posting problem? I recall you saying something like every time you try to post a pic, it screws up your computer. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to see some of your photography. :)

Disclaimer: Just about anyone with any photography experience probably could have done those 10 times better.

Nice photos. But if you believe those Apple commercials you could've.

Apparently, during the last TGT crash, pictures of unknown origin were packed into my gallery storage. None of the pics were posted by me and I don't have a clue as to what they are.

Several Emails to our new management have done nothing to correct the problems. I can't delete them and they won't help me to remove them. I found a few of my old pics that could be deleted so I did that. It left room for about 3 photos.

There are some pics in that gallery that I really want in my album and my concern is that they would delete ALL of the pictures! Summed up........Our new managers declined to help me, so I'm stuck with a gallery full of crap, origin unknown.

Oddly, they also deleted 10 positive feedback posts and once again, declined to fix that. At least they left me ONE positive feedback!

BUT....I'm glad to be here, enjoy the forums and the Serenity prayer says something about "accepting the things I cannot change" so that's what I did.

Throw it to your eye and mash the shutter button while set to "A" and there may be a half-second delay. On low-end cameras and with phone cameras, there may be a 3-second delay. Photo missed.

Like Ben said, I've grumbled over shutter delay on the digital cameras, too. There is a pic in my Gallery showing me in mid air with a Kawasaki KLX 650 single cylinder dirt bike. It was taken by then GF Carla with a HP digital. Man, that thing had the slowest shutter, so she had to trigger it long before she wanted it to snap, then hope that the camera caught the image! The image in the gallery was actually taken with the bike on the way DOWN!

The bike was called the "Bone Breaker". It claimed several fingers, a few ribs and my right hand.....broken.

That pic is in my Profile album but I'll try to post it here.

Here's that Alcatraz picture from my profile album. How Mary set this shot up is beyond me. She had NO experience with photography. It was taken with a Pentax K1000 35mm and scanned/digitized later.

I have two of the K1000 cameras and they're an all time favorite!

First off, a pet peeve. "Mirrorless DSLRs" are not SLRs of any kind. In an SLR, you have to look through the lens. That requires a mirror. To say that looking at a remote LCD image of what came through the lens (which is how they work) is the same as "looking through the lens" is hyperbolic marketing, at best. IMO, it's flat-out lying.

Picture quality isn't the concern. Viewing quality is the concern. Instead of looking through the lens, you look at a little LCD screen in a little window. So they handle like an SLR (good) but now both the view when you're looking into the camera and the shutter release lag behind real life (bad). Add to that the crappy resolution of the picture in the viewfinder and those cameras are a non-starter for serious work.

That said, they're usefully smaller than DSLRs and all those problems I just listed are being incrementally solved in each new generation. For some people, those cameras are already plenty good enough; for others, not so much.

It's your choice. If you decide to go that route, I suggest you buy based on the quality and availability of the lenses you want to use for your kind of photography. With good lenses, you can upgrade bodies whenever a new generation is improved enough to make a difference you judge to be worthwhile.

All that aside, how about something like a photobucket or image shack account, and share the links to the pics?
