No, I did not. It crossed my mind, but decided against it, since he left and I thought I may be overreacting. In hindsight, chances are it was caught on the ATM camera and they may have wanted to take a look at it to see if it was someone known to them.

As others are not as well aware of your surroundings as you are . It might prevent the soccer mom from getting money stolen etc. It could be just reported as suspicious behavior.

    **UPDATE**

I called the Credit Union and let them know what happened. They asked me if I felt threatened while using their ATM. I told them, "It may have been nothing, BUT yes, when someone tries to squeeze into a small space between the ATM kiosk and my truck at 6:15 in the morning, it makes one a bit uneasy."

They said that they would send a request to the appropriate department to review footage during that time period and before and after to see if I am the only vehicle he approached at the machine. They would make a determination of whether to contact law enforcement. They then asked me if it is OK if they relay my information and contact to law enforcement as well.

I'll tell you - I work around the corner and because it's between a couple different bus stops and a train stop, this area gets a lot of "passers-by" just walking thru - many have caught my eye as obviously shady.

My money is on the guy is an opportunistic predator and will definitely try it again, but maybe not in the same place.

What did he look like? What was he wearing? I often eat lunch right there across the street, so I'll keep an eye out.

African American, age looked to be between 30 and 40 I guess, was very hard to tell really, I spent more time looking at his hands through my mirror than anything. Jeans and heavy jacket, he was bundled up like it was a snow storm, but it really wasn't cold yesterday morning, a little cool, but I would have been sweating my butt off in the jacket he had on. He actually looked fairly clean cut, did not look like someone on the streets. Sadly, I do not think I could give a good description and unless he was dressed the same, I do not even think I could pick him out of a line up. I failed miserably at noting a good description, I was more worried about his hands than anything at the time. I would most definitely recognize his raspy voice though if I heard him again. Sounded like he was trying to imitate Darth Vader lol

Chances are this was probably a whole lot about nothing and he probably just wanted a smoke, but it definitely put me on edge. I do not think I overreacted though. Thoughts?

Almost no chance of that. He was going to rip you off. Probably a grab and run.

The I need a smoke is probably the most used lie criminals use on victims, with asking for directions second .

That there is a monster red flag to me. Makes it easy to hide a weapon, and makes it harder to describe him to the cops.

glad it turned out in your favor. Good on ya for having good SA. When I'm at a walk up ATM I'm always doing a 360 scan looking for crap like that. Same at a drive up ATM. All the doors get locked only my window is rolled down. I'd guess he was looking for an opportunity as well and figured you were a regular person in "condition white" and when you reacted he pulled the ol' just seeing if you have a smoke line.
I've had people try similar lines on me at gas pumps, probably just looking for handouts. When I'm OCing they usually say nevermind and walk away when they notice the gun.

Ever watch a convenience store robbery? Guys walk in. Stick a gun in the cashiers face and demand money.

At an ATM Most people drive up. Stick their card in, select English. Punch their pin in and then they notice they got a gun in their face.

You stopped that from happening. Congratulations.

I am very aware of my surroundings when I'm at the ATM, and I don't even like people pulling up close to my car, let alone trying to get to me on foot. I don't see anything wrong with what you did. That guy had no business doing that, and any person with even an ounce of common sense would realize that doing that was a stupid idea.

You failed at nothing. Trying to be a good witness can get you dead. I agree he was up to no good (cigarette my butt) and you put a stop to it, that was the first order of business and it was done well. Everyone walked away, it was a good day.

He would be so much easier to identify with a bullet hole in his forehead, though.

I think about this sort of thing every time I drive up to an ATM. Your story reminds me to pull up closer to the machine than I normally do. Thanks for sharing your story.

I always try and look around when I pull up but usually there is tons of cover/concealment around for people to hide behind. I had a friend who liked to turn off his car while he did his transaction and I tried to convince him to not do that. I figured it would probably be best to keep the car ready to move in case someone approached but to each his own.

Or just park and OC while you walk up to one. You have a much greater field of vision standing at a machine than sitting in your vehicle.
