No, they won't. They are part of the food chain just like every other. They have been thete millions of years without wiping everything else out. They only eat very small fish.

No disrespect, but I've seen it happen firsthand in our ponds back home. Ever catch any bass or bream in an area infested with gar? Those small fish they eat WOULD have grown...had they not been eaten. But, we can agree to disagree. ;)

Pulled this sucker out this AM. It was bigger than the picture shows.

    To All,

IF you are near The Alamo City & have time to fish, MILLER'S POND & SOUTHSIDE LION'S CLUB LAKE are stocked every 2 weeks with RAINBOW TROUT or CHANNEL CATFISH (depending on the season of the year).

Last Saturday PM, I talked with a man whose son caught a 16 pound CHANNEL CAT last Fall at SS Lion's club Lake on an about 2" feeder-goldfish (from a pet shop) on a long whippy spinning rig. = The man said, "My son fought the big cat for over 15 minutes before I finally got a landing net under him."
(Mr. Lopez said, "We turned it loose to grow some more." and then, " I like pan-size catfish to eat.")

I'm also told by a local park ranger that an over 6 pound Rainbow Trout was recently taken from that same small lake on a streamer fly.

    just a "tip", satx

Ventured to a different pond this morning. Nothing big, but snapped pics of 2 of the 3 I caught in about an hour and a half.

I usually go to the pond in front of city hall with the fly rod. Used to get bass, cats & bluegill but they put trout in it so only large cats now. Got tired of loosing lures so switched to fly casting. 10# carp on a fly will wear you out.

    popper,

    You can say that again.
(I have an 8 foot spinning rig for crappie that's made-up on a "bass weight" fly-rod blank. = Hooked a about 20# freshwater drum on it one afternoon in 2015 & that was a LONG, though exciting, afternoon fight.= It was like being hooked up with a Buick on that UL rig.)

    yours, satx

Was able to hit it this AM before sunrise. This is rare because I am usually getting kids to school.

I caught this little one around 6:25 and was later visited by a momma duck and her 5 ducklings.

A great way start to Good Friday.

Caught this little one at a different pond along with a nice sized catfish. No pictures of the cat.

What I DON'T have a picture of is the estimated 2 pound large mouth that got away. It would have been my largest to date. I was 2-3 cranks away from lipping it and he jumped and threw the hook. Since I was in a public park with others, I refrained from shouting obscenities.

So I just discovered a new addition to the pond down the street from my house.

I went down tonight to wet a line for about an hour before I turned in. I had a headlamp on that casts both white and green beams. The green doesn't attract as many bugs, and I don't think it spooks the fish as much. While casting in a corner that has proved fruitful before I notice a pair of green glowing orbs just above the water right up against the bank. Then they started to move. In my direction. Switching my light to white the orbs turned orange.

Being from southeast Louisiana, I knew right then what it was. An alligator.

It proceeded about 15 feet towards the middle of the pond and stopped. I moved slightly closer to confirm my identification. It stayed where it was and I was able to get a side view from about 15-20 feet away. I couldn't see the rest of his body, but judging from the estimated 4 inches from the eyes to the nostrils, I am guessing he is about roughly 4 feet long.

Since he was occupying the area I wanted to fish and showed no signs of leaving I called it a night. I just didn't feel like wrastlin' him tonight.

This pond is adjacent to a larger pond and they become connected when we get heavy rains. He must've come over sometime today, because I had never seen him before.

He is going to really ruin my fishing if he sticks around. I would really like to catch him and make some Alligator Sauce Piquant and maybe a belt. However I think the .22 between the eyes would raise some concerns from the neighbors.

Before you say, "pics or it didn't happen", I tried, but they didn't come out.

I'll try and find him during daylight hours when I have a chance to confirm his length.

Pulled my largest to date out of the pond down the street. Weighed in at just under a pound.

Crappy picture doesn't do it justice, but he was a bit lethargic and I wanted to get him back in the water. He swam away to be caught another day.

Changing the flavor slightly, since it was the only thing biting this morning. If this petit bébé would have been a bit bigger I'd a skinned, filleted or ground it up, and made fried gar balls, or gar balls and gravy. Most consider alligator gar trash fish, but to me they look like dinner ... you gotta work for it, but they can be prepared to taste damned good.
