The Boeing 737 that had to set down in Philadelphia on its flight from La Guardia to Love Field, had ONE FATALITY according NTSB.

I have no idea what caused the engine to fail; NTSB will determine all. But I’m guessing a likely suspect for the deadly projectile problem was a turbine blade (or part thereof).

Condolences to the family of the person killed. And wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

A pilot lauded for landing a commercial flight after an engine exploded was previously a pioneering pilot in the US Navy, it has been confirmed.

Tammy Jo Shults was in the cockpit of a Southwest Airlines plane yesterday when an engine exploded during a flight from New York to Dallas, resulting in the death of a woman who was sucked out of a window.

But Ms Shults’ heroics stopped the situation from potentially worsening, as she saved the lives of passengers who were frantically scrambling for oxygen masks as the plane made a emergency descent.

‘So we have part of the aircraft missing, so we’re going to need to slow down a bit’, Shults told air traffic control.

The fuselage damage was a result of the engine's turbine coming apart.

Failure analysis will be difficult as many of the engine parts are now spread across a large swath of countryside. But they will likely get it done, they usually do. Will take a year or so to see the report.

May the Good Lord send His comfort to the family of the lady who died.

    Great story.

Having seen how those turbine blades are constructed, it amazes me how reliable they are. Amen to oldag's comments.

It seems to me that I've seen and read several stories (I think including a Myth busters episode) over the years that state it's impossible for a person to be sucked through a broken airplane window yet this woman almost was.

    Prayers for her family.

Actually ONLY one blade of the turbine broke loose and trashed the cowling, causing the rest of the damage to the engine and the plane.

You can see the empty spot near this guy’s elbow and the bent blades on either side of the gap.

Good pic. Hadn't seen that one yet. At those kind of rpm's, losing one blade can do a lot of damage. Throws rotor out of balance, rotor gets up against the stationary parts, bad things happen. Not to mention the one blade that took flight.

From what I've read, the thing the FAA is interested in, is there is supposed to be a containment shield inside the engine. It obviously failed.

    Per Reuters:

Sumwalt (National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt) said the fan blade, after suffering metal fatigue where it attached to the engine hub, suffered a second fracture about halfway along its length. Pieces of the plane were found in rural Pennsylvania by investigators who tracked them on radar. The metal fatigue would not have been observable by looking at the engine from the outside, Sumwalt said.
