Many 1911's require a little bit of tweaking at first to run reliably.
Usually its the extractor and/or magazine.
Many manufacturers send them out with shit magazines to trim costs.
Tuning the extractor is quite simple.
Then you have to run the snot out of them to wear in the parts.
That said I have had a couple of very expensive 1911 that just flat ass would not run.
With any mass produced item you get a lemon now and then.

I wish i would have known this. I really WANT to be a fan of the 1911. Maybe I could have had something done to make mine work properly.

I will likely own one in the future, likely a Colt. I'll keep this in mind.

Just keep in mind, you will probably have more issues with the entry level 1911's.

The dozen or so 1911 I've had have been great out of the box. They all ranged from $400-$900 so not super expensive but still good shooters. The only one that has problems is the GSG 1911 in .22lr but everyone else had the same issues.

Believe it or not, but my first and only 1911 is a Remington R1 Enhanced. You'd think it'd be just 'ok', but it has been outstanding. Nice and smooth, tight with no rattle, shoots great. I got a 'free' threaded barrel as part of the promo/rebate program they had running at the time. It too works well, but it has an ever so slight tie-up you can feel as it locks up, but doesn't affect how it shoots.

It's a couple down on my list. I'm in a holding pattern for a 6.5 CM upper. But I will get one, likely a used one. I generally prefer pistols that are broken in.

In my 40 years of shooting, I literally have never seen one single Glock jam. Conversely, pretty much every range trip I've seen a 1911 jam, usually a FTE. In spite of the meticulous care most 1911 owners give their weapons.

I'm no Glock fanboy. They are ugly, they are a square chunk of plastic. That shoots seemingly every single time.

If I had to be classified as a fan of a brand, it would be Sig. I like em a lot. Have owned half a dozen over the years.

But my two Glocks have worked like clockwork, in spite of the fact that I've never cleaned them. (It's kind of an experiment).

We obviously go to different ranges. :) I have never seen a 1911 jam at the range. Plenty of glocks and other plastic pistols though. Almost every trip I see one of them malfunctioning.

This has not my experience. I have had one SA not run out of the box. Quality problem at the factory. All the rest ran great from the first shot on. No break in required.

Had the chance to look at an R1, although not shoot it. Looked to be a pretty solid pistol.

I've got 13 1911 pistols. All of them run just fine. The only parts I've ever had break are from Colt pistols. Three barrel bushings and two slide stops.

If you want a solid 1911 get a Dan Wesson.

I've got six Colts. Old Delta Elite in blue, SS Officer's, LW Defender, XSE LW Commander and two S70 MKIV.

Two Dan Wessons, PM 7 in 10mm and CBOC in 10mm.

One Sig GSR, very early gun, 125th 1911 ever built by Sig

Two Springfield Armory, TRP Operator half rail, Operator with full rail.

Two S&W, 1911 PD Scandium frame commander, and a 108299 which was their target gun at the time.

One Colt S70 frame is dedicated to a Ciener conversion. Nine .45 ACP and three 10mm.

I'd love to get a 9mm 1911. If I could sell a few guns I could make it happen.

    Gunz are icky.
    The A-O I had was a turd.
The factory mag was useless. I used some old USGI mags and those problems went away.
The extractor was a weak piece of crap. Replaced it immediately.
Had to do a throat polish.
After that it ran pretty well with 230grn RNFMJ but nothing else.
It ran good until the front sight flew off. Never did find it.
    That did it.
    Gone. Not forgotten tho.

Had a Springfield EMT 9mm that was a beautiful gun.
A beautiful P.o.S. that would not run.
After the THIRD trip back to Springfield I said F it and traded it away.
Had a Springfield GI style gun that was superb.

The S&W 1911's are supposedly sleepers. Might check them out.

I had a chance at a Colt Commander for around $500 15 years ago. I passed due to my prior AO experience. But I've always had the Commander in the back of my mind.

Bring your butt to the get togethers and you can play 1911 all you want.
