Okay, not to play devil’s advocate here (but I will, kinda). Let me ask the question a different way. Is it reasonable at the end of Trump’s first term in office (four years) to expect the illegal entry problem to be fixed?

I know the illegal entry problem is greatly reduced from past years but “they” are obviously still getting in as evidenced by this recent “family separation” issue. What I want to know is WHEN will the illegals be stopped from crossing the border in mass?

Nothing is fool proof, plus we have two oceans and a northern border. The southern border wall will take a lot of time to build and people have been crossing illegally long before I was born.

Nothing is fool proof but a completed wall with sensors (etc.) and properly manned, would go a long way in stopping mass crossings. Sea ports of entry haven’t historically been our main problem (and neither has the border with Canada - but you knew that).

The problem as identified by Trump, early on in his campaign was and always has been the southern border. What’s a reasonable time frame to expect this problem to be solved?

(And to say, “you’ll never be able to *completely* solve it” is dodging the main thrust of the topic. Let me phrase it by saying “substantially solved” then.... such that it’s no longer a main national concern?)

What I’m trying to get to is, how do you measure whether Trump gets a passing grade or a failing grade on this topic that he almost singularly brought to the attention of the American public?

Second term...to get it going prolly. But the wall isn't the end all be all but part of a whole. It's merely a part of what should be done.

It will never be stopped. It can be slowed with enough money. Only so much slowing can be expected in the first term.

Don't get hung up on the wall. Mexico is gonna build a ladder. It's the cajones to address the problem, fight the real enemies ( on this side of the border) and make the unpopular necessary moves to stop the bleeding.

Tough nut to crack , but AMNESTY has no place in this situation whatsoever . Clinton did that, and we can all see how that plugged the flow.

Bust the SOBs that hire them, mass deportation , ZERO TOLERANCE .... that'd be a start.

Congress has yet to agree to fund the wall in its entirety; so far, just piecemeal funding. But why should they fund any of it. Didn’t Trump promise us that Mexico would pay for it?

Maybe Congress is expected to fund it and then Mexico would reimburse us? And how would they do that, by charging tariffs on their goods crossing the border. (Which just means the American consumers would ultimately pay for it?)

Recently read that Waste Management just paid 5.5mil and fired some mgt people for working illegals and another company I don't remember got the same... that fine was a hand slap...but this is a way to solve the problem. STOP all the welfare, food stamps and employment opportunities and the flow will be greatly reduced.
You break Mexico's immigration laws you go to jail...no subsidy no BS that's it!

So, it seems apparent to me, at least a couple of you guys didn’t buy into Trump’s proclamation that he was “going to FIX that problem”?

(I just wanted a yardstick to measure the solution by.... or at least a time frame). Personally I think it’s a problem that can be fixed but as a couple of folks have mentioned it’s going to take a different approach, maybe in addition to a wall and most certainly, money. I think if Trump was serious, fours years is enough time to get the fix in place. Time will tell.

    .....”greatly reduced”.......is greatly exaggerated.

The problem is too big to expect a fix in four or even eight years.

There is a lot of territory to cover and wall up. Add in time to change gears on border protection to defend the wall.

This has been an issue for over 200 years. To expect success in a term or two is a little short sighted.

The success is that Trump has acknowledged the problem and started a solution.

It only took us a decade to put a man on the moon (an infinitely more complex task) but it’ll take more time than that to build a wall? My measure of success is having fixed the problem so that it’s no longer a national issue.

Seems to me to be a one, maybe two year project. I mean seriously, one Skytrak, one Trackhoe, two cement mixers and two porta-potties???

....now multiply by 100....or 500....or 1000. Not a big deal.
