Afternoon gang. Missed part of a show I really wanted to see this morning because of the Synagogue murders. I was watching a filler show waiting for the show on PBS to start and the news break went right through the hour change and I missed 10mins before I realized what time it was.

It was a show on snail farming, and I'm sure that part covered how they were raised, which is what I was interested in. Found a bunch a few years back, but knowing next to nothing about raising them, they all eventually died. Never even tried eating one.

I'd watch snail farming. Sounds pretty neat. I wonder how they have babies and what they look like.

I wouldn't eat them. There some the best fish bait you can find. They stiffen up underwater and cling to a hook pretty good. Plus they last in a bucket.

Many people have gotten deadly parasites trying to eat them. I'd advise against that if you don't know what your doing.

Well, I picked up some information from the show. The snails they were raising shoot a dart into their potential mate (they are hermaphrodites, BTW,) which was interesting, they said you could see the dart sticking out of their necks. Then they lay the eggs in a trench and cover them with soil. They are just getting into marketing snail caviar. They had about 100,000 snails during filming. They supply a lot of restaurants in the state ( I want to say Massachusetts?)

In France, all the snails are wild harvested, because noone has figured out how to raise them. I believe there is one guy here in Texas raising these local snails, but he is extremely secretive about how. He too, supplies restaurants.

I gathered about 40 from a house I was working on. I didn't eat any, because I was trying different things with different groups, and I wanted to have a good base to work with. I've eaten snails before, and as a matter of fact, have a can right now. Someday, I'll buy the can/ shells and get fancy.

Too closely related to these monsters which I've killed hundreds in Washington, they are said to be edible too:

Helix snails are Republicans, slugs are Demon Crats. I've been an adventurous eater for a long time. Ate a lot of stuff, but it took me a looooong time to finally man up and try escargot.

The local Helix snails look just like the French ones in the store, just about 1/3 smaller than them.
