Because politicians cannot think for themselves. The other counties are doing this so I better too mentality. REmember most politicians were the C- students in high school. So, after daily public statements by Smith County officials, including a statement by tge County Judge last night, that there would be no shelter in place order, the Judge just issued a two week stay at home order.
Since the stay at home wording seemed odd to me, I searched until I found a reasonable explanation using the language from the order. Essentially the judge told people to stay at home unless they need to go out for gas, groceries, home supplies, banking, medical, pharmacy and work. The list of essential businesses is equally large and also allows most small businesses with less than 10 employees to stay open.
I am scratching my head wondering why the order, which is punishable by up to a $1000 fine or 6 months in jail, was issued when the restrictions are really minimal and basically represent what everyone around here has been doing anyway.
I live about 100 yards from the Cherokee County line, so its no problem for me, but I think it will do nothing but alarm folks since I have already seen it referred to as a lockdown on our Nextdoor site.

Gas is cheap & shelter in place is not understood by 65% of the population.Left the house for the first time since the shelter in place order earlier this week. There sure were a lot of cars on the road...
