Fresh Black Eyed Peas cooked with Ham Hocks and sweet corn bread with real butter on it.
With snap beans of course. Gotta have snap beans.

I also miss cornbread. Dripping with butter right out of the oven.

I miss Wolferman's salt rising bread. It makes the absolute best toast .

I miss their English muffins. Sure I can get other brands and I've tried them all. But different is not the same.

Back in East Texas, we would take hot cornbread, butter it and spread a little sugar on it. Dessert.

How about foods I'll never have again?

Mom's goulash - not a complicated dish, and probably not anything that fit the actual definition of "goulash", but there was something in the way she made it that I can't duplicate.

Dad's beef stew (which was really more of a beef and vegetable soup) - he made one attempt to teach me the recipe. I know half of it...and I'll never get another chance to learn. Same deal with his venison jerky.

    Cornbread with butter, AND honey.....
That was desert sir. Thank you very much.
Although we had a Black History lunch at work once and one of the ladies brought homemade fresh blackeyed peas. I mixed in the cornbread and had it for desert. Everyone thought I was nuts except her. Ain't my fault they caint eat proper.

It is. And Trappy's is usually pretty good. At least better than nothing.
But nothing beats homemade with hamhocks and snap beans.

Bangers and mash in Ireland. With a Smithwicks amber beer.

Some days I regret getting out of the Corps.

On a side note, anyone ever been to Trinity College in Dublin Ireland? The library there is one the most beautiful places i have ever had the opportunity to visit!

Actually, try it with some brisket instead of ham hocks.

Interestingly , my Mississippi-bred DW doesn't like black-eyed peas at all ; BUT she really enjoys my dish of turnip greens with Purple Hull Peas(and a few snaps). I either use leftover pork cooking liquid or cook the greens and peas under pork shoulder or ribs in the pressure cooker...YUM !!!
