Looks like the one of the ships own guns is firing into the water. Why?

If you have ever been near one of those cannons when they go off you, I have, you will realize there is no way this side'a hell they are firing those guns in the foreground. I was on a Gearing class destroyer for 5 years and IIRC the gun mounts were 5" 38's. During training exercises one time I'm at GQ on the bow. I "thought" they were finished firing so I opened up the watertight door and stepped outside. Just as I did they fired that damn gun. It was like getting punched in the stomach and in the nose at the same time. Was some wicked concussion!

I had'em until they fell outta my pocket one day and I stepped on them - multiple times. I could get replacements but it seemed they caused just as many problems as they solved.

I wear mine in my ears but I'd be interested in "hearing" about the advantages of carrying them in one's pocket

I'm around noise producing equipment most days. I was told to remove them to prevent more damage to my hearing when operating said equipment. I operate a high speed boat 75-80 mph. I was told to take them out while operating boat. Stick'em in take'em out. Repeat countless times a day. Get fed up with that shit - stick'em in pocket.

Not a pic, but a cool video. If you have a problem with heights (like me) be prepared to feel a little queasy as you watch. I don't know how they get guys to do this job. There isn't enough money in the world to get me up there. Hang in or fast forward to the last 2-3 minutes and it's gut wrenching.
