We used to have a little drive-in burger joint in town many years ago, called Heck's Drive-In. It closed down in the late 1970's. Wife was telling me the other day, that the former owner's grandson and daughter are going to re-open it back up, as Heck's again. with carhops and a menu like back in the time when his grandfather owned the place.

I do remember they had some awesome burgers and the onion rings were just great too.

Honestly, I think the best burgers come from the many smaller places, where they make their own patties and cook them to order. Many of these are going to be close to home and will never get national attention for the most part.

That has been my experience, and it is great to go into small town and find one.

Texas is TOO BIG to have only one best! We should do this geographically, i.e., The Panhandle, The plains, North Texas, East Texas, The Piney Woods, The Hill Country, West Texas, The Gulf Coast, DFW, Houston, SA, Austin......

Don't laugh, but the best chain store burger I like is from Chili's. Just order medium rare. I wish they still had their orange blossom onions.

Was there ever a sambos in texas?

    What not funny?

They had good burgers for a chain even if they had no self awareness. But they died in the 70s so. They would be smoking heaps today and appropriately so. Good food though.

I need to try it. I tried the highly acclaimed Tejas BBQ, and it was a let down.

There are days when something isn't up to their usual there, but out of the x (very many, I can't reveal the number for fear of self incrimination) times I've eaten there, most have been very good.

I don't go out to get burgers, if I want burgers, I cook em myself. There have been a few burger places that had good burgers, like Juicy's, Texas Road House and the Butcher Shop, but none compare to my burgers. But here's the deal, I season to MY taste and cook it to MY liking. Most burger joints have to cook it a certain way to appease everyone. If I go out to eat, it's going to be something that I don't cook often.
