Also food for thought about range visits... you're trusting some "range worker" to take out YOUR can and put it back in the right place. Will they let others shoot it because they didn't look up serials correctly? Will it go back in YOUR box and not the identical looking box next to it?
Speaking personally, I'm big on attention to detail. I handle most all of the "ATF compliance" type things around here, checking things in and out of A&D, all the 'number' stuff that's really easy to mess up. I'm organized to a fault-- -meaning this goes here ALWAYS NO MATTER WHAT DON'T PUT IT SOMEWHERE ELSE.
That all being said... you have no idea about the panic that arises when you can't find a suppressor in the shop. (Because someone put it on the wrong shelf in the safe, or it fell behind other cans, or a Saker 556 got put with the Specwar 556s. Now imagine that you've got someone who may or may not be organized or really focus on that moving a can around all the time.
I'm not saying it will go south, but there's some liability that comes with using a can in jail. Personally I prefer it on the shelf and untouched until we need it for either an audit or someone gets to take it home.
