As I said before, I have read the article, written by liberals, some at the Houston Chronicle, and still no reference to color in any of these laws. Also as I said before, in Texas, people of color were never barred from owning long guns and so I fail to see how this disarms the black population when they can still legally own and carry any rifle or shotgun they please. I really hate it when people, usually liberals, insist on injecting race into everything. Even if everything in these articles are true, which they aren't, it has absolutely nothing to do with today's new Texas gun law. We conservatives insisted this law pass because it is our 2A right, and not to correct some perceived past wrong to black people. And this law will also have no mention of color in it.
Another trouble maker that wants to argue every point with no knowledge of what he speaks.

Try reading my original post again....it spoke to the ORIGINS of the law. But go ahead and wear the blinders...

Hows that, we have a law that says black people can't have guns? I know lots of black people that have guns legally. Why are you saying this?
The laws back then (poll tax, no carry firearms, Blue law (no alcohol sales on Sunday), literacy law, to name a few) were designed in such a way that the local Sheriff or city police, constables, etc could enforce those laws on a very selective basis. While the law did not specify a racial exclusion, the law enforcement entities used those laws to scare non whites (and very low income whites too) and to control those populations.

I did read this history of Texas gun control and although it is largely written by liberals and mostly all opinion as to why these laws were passed, I can find no law or history that says "black" or "negro" or any reference to color in these passed laws. And as far as I can tell, it has never been a crime for blacks to own long guns in Texas, either before or after the civil war. And "Jim Crow" is a liberal talking point meant to scare people of color and has no place in today's political debate, imo.

Then you failed in understanding the context of the history of what was happening to black Americans, specifically freed slaves and blacks in the southern states after the end of the Civil War.

You have to analyze the intent. After the Reconstruction amendments, the former slave states, didn't just pass laws saying "black people can't vote". Black people can't own or carry guns. They did things like...you have to pass a (subjective) literacy test to vote. Lo and behold every time a black man went to vote, they said, guess the number of beans in this jar, or read this passage. Then the White registrar, said....nope you failed. You could carry a handgun if you were "traveling". Oh you're black? Yeah, I (the sheriff) says you're not traveling, so therefore you get locked up.

Powerful point there, I will have to steer clear of your wit.

Wow. You came upon your own conclusions to what someone posted, and several here, myself included showed you historical evidence that showed you were incorrect, and now you want to reply in a sarcastic manner because your are butthurt?

That sum it up pretty good for you? This should help relieve some of the sting.

You may keep believing Texans are so racist that we kept handguns illegal for 150 years because we are afraid of blacks having them (while long guns are legal for all) and I will choose to believe this forum has been co-opted by weak minded RINO's and liberals. I will say again. this gun bill has nothing to do with race. As a matter of fact, show me any Texas gun bill from any era that mentions race and I will stfu. and if you can't, you may do the same.

Why do you keep referring to unarming black people? Texas was not like the movies. NO ONE was allowed to open carry after 1865.

Ya keep harping on this, and people here are going to think you are either dense in the head, or wanting to just argue because you don't like thinking you might be wrong, or possibly even just trolling the forum.

Best advice I can give you is, accept you are wrong and move on, or keep right on the path you are and it won't be long before one of the Mods gives you a "vacation" to reflect on your attitude here on the forum.

    All up to you. Cheers.

Congratulations - you've proven yourself to be not only dense, but a true one-trick idiot with an affinity for name-calling because you can't think for yourself. In the meantime, maybe you should consider trying to take a aeronautical trajectory toward a rolling pastry product.

Something tells me Ellisj is under 40, public school educated and possibly not a native Texan.
Those of us 70+ can remember what Texas was like in the 40's, 50's and 60's for Hispanics and Blacks. It was not called racisim back then, it was just the way it was with no name to it.
