I had to retire my Vaquero Grande when I moved to Texas. Can you imagine, you can legally carry a larger folder in Komifornia?

I actually haven't had a chance to use this one in the field, I'm thinking about bringing it with me to training this summer but it might be a little too much what do you think?

Also (maybe this'll open a can of worms), what is the general consensus of what type of knife is best, folded or fixed blade? Obviously they both have their strengths/weaknesses but what do you use most often?

I have a full sized Emerson Commander plain edge that I carry almost exclusively. Kershaw Leek and a Buck 501 also get carried.

I also fancy an A.G. Russle ultimate pen knife at times. 0.2 oz Titanium bolsters and a 1.5in V10 blade it's the best $20 gift and pen knife. It's about as thick as a quarter.

You are correct that both have advantages, there's just not a "which one is best" answer.

The real discriminators as far as fixed or folder are your carry limitations. If you can carry a big bowie on that drop leg rig you pictured, more power to you, can't get much better knife functionality than that. Of course, there is a cost there in terms of mobility, risk of having it taken during a fight, and that is a place you could have carried a pistol and/or more mags.

So for you as a civilian going to Wal-Mart, that folding CRKT you have is probably best, but as a soldier on deployment that big fixed beast would be great.

In any case, often train drawing and deploying your knife under some pressure. I have had guys show up to class the first time with various fixed blades carried IWB, because someone on an internet forum told them that was the way to go, but they hadn't done the practice to be able to confidently access the blade when backpeddling, falling, or trying to fend someone off.

Up until last weekend this had been my EDC layout.

    20aa845c.jpg

    Kabar TDI small
    Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter
    CRKT M16

BUT, this past weekend I lost the folder somehow :( No idea where it ran off to. Guess I'll have to replace it ASAP. So for now it's the KABAR on my belt under my shirt and the Cold Steel strapped to my ankle.

I also carry a cable knife (think heavy box-cutter), cable snips, and a Gerber multi-tool that isn't commercially available but was issued to me.

Gerber Paraframe I (serreated edge). It's smallish, low cost, so I'm not out a lot if it gets lost for somereason or someone lifts it from my locker at work, and civil enough not to draw attention if I whip it out in a parking lot to cut a box open or something.
