I was traumatized by the dentist as a child. So was my sister and my cousins who went to the same dentist. Effer must have been a sadist…

So, I dread going with a passion and have been without dental insurance for decades. I only go when I HAVE to.

Now retired and working part time, I actually had an opportunity to purchase decent dental insurance and have been going to the dentist. I like this guy he is mild mannered, soft-spoken, explains things and is reasonably priced. I first went to him for a tooth extraction which only cost me $80 with the insurance. He suggested a deep cleaning and I agreed since it’s been about 20 years since I’ve had my teeth cleaned.

I brush and water-floss daily, but the decades had resulted in plenty of plaque. So, he suggested two rounds of deep cleaning, doing 1/2 of my mouth at a time.

Today was the first half. Just take my ass out and whip me with a baseball bat! Better yet, put me in the ring with Chuck Norris after I’ve called him a sissy and told him I did his mother!

This was worse than having a tooth pulled! If you see me and notice the right side of my mouth is plaque free and the left side isn’t, you will know I decided not to go back for round two!

When I have issues with my teeth, I just take them out, give them to the dentist and tell him to call me
when their ready. No muss, no fuss and no pain.

    Its worth it.

Get the deep cleaning done then stay on top of it. The maintenance is easy and almost relaxing.

Ibuprofen is GREAT for dental pain

I was also traumatized by the dentist as a kid. The small town I grew up in had 3 dentists within driving distance. One of them was really good and therefore expensive and hard to get in to, so we didn't go there. The second was a quack who really screwed my mouth up. He insisted on pulling a primary tooth that didn't need pulled. Then the third dentist opened and from then on that was where we went. That guy was a sadist. He hated giving any kind of pain killer. He had kids my age and I found out years later that he beat them and his wife. Needless to say, I avoided dentists for a long time.

Then I moved to Houston and to my amazement I found really good dentists. The first was one who had a beautiful daughter that got a summer job at the place I was working. I had a wisdom tooth that was killing me and she convinced me to see him. Turned out that he had 2 beautiful daughters. He was a great dentist and he could pull a tooth or put in a filling without any pain. Then I got married and my wife agreed he was a great dentist - until someone mentioned that I went out with one of the daughters (long before seeing my wife). That put an end to that dentist. So my wife found a new dentist closer to where we lived via someone she worked with. Turned out that he hired a bunch of dental assistants who needed to work somewhere to finish their training. There were at least 10 beautiful girls working there. Eventually he married one of them and the next thing you know the only assistants he had were over 50. Then there was a dentist in the same building as the company I worked for. I lost a filling and went there. He was drilling and I was tensing up, so he asked if it was hurting. Well, I expected pain (based on the miserably home town dentist) but I told him yeah. He said, "Oh, I don't believe a patient should ever be in pain. Let me do some more numbing." I almost cried with joy. Currently I have a pretty good dentist. He has the personality of a door knob, but does good technical work.

I have found that using baking soda first, then using toothpaste, does a great job of removing plaque. I still hate going to the dentist, but my checkups have been good and with very little cleaning necessary.

Dentists are better today, I too went to a dentist when I was growing up. He didn't use anesthesia, it was terrible. Later on we went to a dentist that gave you a coupon for a free ice cream cone when he was done. Still didn't like going, one day I was done and had my coupon waiting for my brother. Dentist came back out and wanted to do more to me, I had my coupon no way. He said he'd give a coupon for an ice cream sundae.
Like many people I only go when I have to. They are better today and I'd say painless, I'm missing a few teeth and have several crowns. Missing teeth are in the back, I can still chew.
My Dad had no teeth and could eat steak.

We must have gone to the same guy. He wasn't in pain, so he saw no need for painkillers. Guess it increased his profit a few bucks.

    skf,

I'm with cg2300...get the rest of your 'toothal maintenance' accomplished. You'll be glad you did!

Over the years, I've had a lot of dental work done on me and while not fun, it has to be done.

Even now, in the twilight of my years, I still own all of my teeth.

Except for me, 'everyone' in my biological family has (for those still alive that is) 'false teeth'.

You want to keep your teeth?

    Get the cleaning done.

Another wisdom tooth is acting up for me. I'm mostly dreading it because the pain of extraction, $600 for the pleasure to experience another week of pain, and eating nothing.

After decades of can't filling caused by dry mouth, there just isn't much tooth left. I'm still sore over multiple doctors filling cavities instead of recognizing and tearing the root problem.

And another thing, the receptionist was shocked I don't have dental insurance and doesn't know what to do as I'd like to pay cash, use my HSA, or put it on my credit card. Are we really at that stage where we must use insurance to simply pay for services rendered?

I have a dentist in Richardson who is a little tiny Asian guy. I'm a little on the large side, and hes so small he can fit his whole hand in my mouth. Dude is awesome.

I've put off going to the dentist with a hole in my tooth, I could feel it with my tongue. If I kept food out of it it didn't hurt. If it did hurt Tylenol would work. I probably put it off for 6 months, finally went to the dentist. After all the worrying the tooth was extracted, it wasn't so bad. I should have gone to the dentist sooner.

I think i got sold into extracting the remaining 3 wisdom teeth. She said because of the hook at the root and the upper 2 being so hard to get to she wouldn't do it. $300 for an x-ray she sent me to an oral surgeon. Not looking forward to this. Her assistant was hyping up the general IV sedation, I reminded her that wears off and I get a week of pain and not eating.
