So you can't imagine any situation where you may want to shoot someone without giving away your position, or telling the whole area a gun has been fired? I'm thinking you don't realize how quiet a suppressed .22 really is.

Absolutely - but remember that the OP was indicating that this was to the the PRIMARY weapon - and THAT would be a mistake, IMO. Now....would there be a .22 in my arsenal? If at ALL possible, hell yeah - but it dang well wouldn't be the ONLY one!

Wow thats alot of posts guys. The scenario was just an example, it wouldn't be my first choice IF i had money or a job as a primary.

It will be my first firearm and everyone tells me its a great platform to learn on.

umhmmmm....you go ahead and arm fer the ninja war. Me, I'm gonna load for bear.

Tactically, it would be a hit and run weapon. Something you'd use to sow confusion and hopefully fear when someone falls after the sound of the bullet impacting and nothing more. No idea where it comes from.

Is it my kind of fight? Not really. But I can see where it's useful from a tactical standpoint. Me, I'd rather kick the front door in and lead with my AK.

I like confusion and misdirection to accomplish my objective and escape. This is actually my preferred tactic at work, especially in meetings

To the OP, it sounds like it's your only option anyway. Most people start on a .22 to learn their way around guns. Just get one and start shooting.

And never, ever expect people on the internet to agree on a caliber

If your sure you want a 22lr I'll mention the most accurate and reliable out-of-the-box rifle i've ever owned (including center fire).

The legendary semi-auto Marlin model 60.

Not tacticool but WOW, what a shooter.
Mine is wearing a bipod and 3-9 scope. Its shot fifty yard half inch groups often with plain jane Fed bulk (when the west Texas wind is cooperating).

I picked my 60 up for $10. Replaced the stock and eventually put $200 worth of glass on $30 rings. I like shooting golf balls at 100 yards with it. If I had the money, I'd love to put a really good scope on there.

Wow, now that you mention it, it was the late 90s. I forgot that it's been a while. But the gun didn't work when I bought it. The little recoil buffer inside had broken in half and was blocking the trigger from releasing the hammer.

AR-7, I have one. Not very impressed. Yea for a "oh shit im lost in the woods" or pulling a Gilligan's island type scenario, its better than nothing. But no i wouldnt rely on it if i had another option.

Seeing how I brought up other options..
There is the famous 10/22 ruger. I have one love it, once you know how to feed it (what it likes) you are good to go.

then we have the 10/22's odd brother the .22 charger. its a 10/22 in pistol form. Takes the same mags. comes with a bi-pod. will fit in a backpack. I dont have one yet

then there is the M-6 Scout. this comes in 22LR over .410 or .22 Hornet over .410, this is a single shot breakopen with ammo storage in the stock. I also have one of these in the .22 hornet. I can hit a clay pedgon @100 yards pretty regularly with the 22 hornet. The .410 with the PDX loads seems dangerous to anyone within say 25-30 yards. But I digress I dont have experience with the 22LR version.

Then there is the marlin papoose Also dont have one yet. but have heard good things.

Now Im sure there are a thousand different rifles, and just as many calibers to look at. The OP was talking about .22 LR so I am going to stick to that.
Is the 22LR the best answer in a fight. No, but is it better than nothing? hell yea.
It will be cheap to train with and low recoil and low noise / muzzle flash signature. Would I try to take on a armed military front with a .22, yeaaa.. no.
but I think in a home defence situation, I doubt the mutant zombie biker would take the time to read the caliber stamp on the barrel. This is not a "Snatch" situation where the bad guy should get a chance to read the barrel stamp. I think at a decent range 10-30 .22 HP holes say expanding to .36 is doable and would end the threat, most probably fatal.

ok out of threads, btw i love my .22 LRs

If you want a good SHTF rifle thats accurate, inexpensive, can be upgraded to take 30rd mag, and has plenty of stopping power look for a SKS. If you keep your eyes open you can occassionally find one for around $200, but there's always lots of them with upgrades going for around $300.

seems like this has moved from the original question. Which 22 to get. Personally i would not worry about tactical stock or anything else in that isle at CTD. Just go to walmart and pick up a plain wood stock 10-22, light relialble and fun to shoot, easy to add optics also and plenty of options for aftermarket hi-cap mags. in a shtf scenario i would want an m1a2 abrams but we cant always get what we want and building an arsenal takes time. Start simple and go from there. Model 60 is also a good rifle, very similar to a ruger in many ways, but the mag options are nice.
