Hey i was jsut jacking with my CB, and scanners and such and decided to ask if anyone on here runs a CB or a HAM station.

I am getting ready to take a HAM exam pretty soon hopefully - so i will be able to really have some fun. My main motivation is to talk to the guys in the ISS

Used to run CB back in the day, but when they dropped the license requirement it REALLY went downhill. Still use 'em when on the bike, but that's about it.

I want to put a CB in my war wagon. Just waiting to see a used one at a yard sale.

i have got a little cb car set right now setup in my office like a home base set. got it for 20 bucks shipped on amazon.
came with a mic, i had an old mag mount antenna in the closet, so i slapped that onto the metal roof above my porch - seems to make a pretty good ground shield - like the top of a car... going to make myself a nice big antenna. and some special ones for scanning the skies for satellites.

I've been playing on 11 Meter (CB) for sometime. I've actually got a 10 and 11 meter radio in my truck. I'm waiting to find a hamfest so I can test and get my ticket as I really want to start playing with field expedient antenna's (di-poles, beams, etc.). I used to do that stuff in the Marine Corpus and HF was always fun.

Mainly use CB for roadtrips just to listen in, and worst case if theres no cell phone coverage it's a means of communication. I know after a couple hurricanes when I was in Louisiana it was always working. Or if I go out to my buddys ranch we can use them for communication due to lack of cell phone coverage. Definately a good item to have, I wouldn't go buy the cheapest thing though. Do some research and make sure you set up your antenna correctly, if not you won't be able to talk worth a damn. You can put a low budget system together that will talk, but it's more than just plugging it in. Tuning the antenna, propper placement, bonding, setting everything up and you can really talk with a barefoot radio. Wealth of knowledge on this on the internet, do alittle homework and you will get the most out of it. Just don't go buy a big linear or "amp" and start walking over everyone or spurious emissions. Some guys end up in bands or freq's they shouldn't and you have to remember military, law enforcement, and EMS utilze those bands. You start messing that up and it's not good.

If any of you are down around my neck of the woods I'll help you set up your rig if you need help with the instillation etc. I've learned allot over the years and it's a fun hobby to me. CB/11 meter is a dieing thing.

Anyone know if any HamFest or such coming up in South Texas? I need to test and I hear that's about the best way to get it done.
