I did all the soils inspections when that road was being built and suffice it to say, theres a ton of wildlife down there. Many of us tried to voice our opinion about the danagers of that road but they went unheard and now we are seeing the consequences. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand that we were constantly running hogs off during contruction with tons of heavy equipment that cars arent going to do anything to scare them off. I told my wife she isnt allowed to drive that road at night.

Ill have to talk to one of the guys still doing punch lists down there and see if he can get some contact info on some of the hunts theyre allowing down there. Would be a fun TGT meet lol.

Can't let nature get in the way of building toll roads!

FYI, barbed wire doesn't do jack against hogs; you'd need netting and they may even tear that up or go under.

40 miles of hog proof fencing in BFE? No wonder our taxes are insane with all these sort of "helpful" ideas.

Maybe people can just slow down at night and look out for hogs. Maybe throw up a few signs warning about hogs on the roads. If you're driving through the country at night you should be looking for animals anyway. Whitetail deer will tear up your vehicle too and I've seen them jump the high game fences with my own two eyes.

Best chance you have are those concrete highway dividers and pile gravel on the inside faces of them. Hogs can't hop over, gravel falls in the hole if they try to dig under. It's still fighting a losing battle - best is to just not build where the pests haven't been exterminated yet.

I never said it would be cost-effective. I said it would be better than wire mesh fences. Did you miss the part that said something like "It's still fighting a losing battle - best is to just not build where the pests haven't been exterminated yet."? I know it's a really long post, but them words get important.

Doc Roe, do you ever see a thread and think "Maybe for once I shouldn't post shit I have no idea about"?

Seriously, barbed wire and even 2x4 wire does nothing to stop hogs. All it does is coral them into coming out the holes in sections of fence they bust through. Hogs are some mean mofos and some little strands of wire do nothing to stop them. I made the mistake of shooting a 200ish pound hog in one of my feeder pens and that hog ran through the lower 3 wires of my fence like it wasnt even there. Another time we went to check our hog trap and didnt see it in the headlights where we had left it. Once we got closer we saw thw drag marks and then blood. An apparently determined big boy had gotten in our trap and decided he wanted out. He had banged the trap so hard and so many times that he had moved the trap over a hundred yards down into the creek bottom where he finally busted through the door panel. This is 4ga hog panel that has 12 horizontal wires in yhe first foot that he busted through and you guys think some barb wire or even 2x4 panel fence is going to do anything?

There are only two solutions, lights or hunt them. Fences will only be tore up very quickly and cost a lot of money. Barb wire and tpost arent exactly cheap anymore and it would need to be a 6 strand to even think about doing anything only to be repaired constantly.

Those of you suggesting the fencing idea are revealing just how slick your city shoes really are.

I missed this, and all too true. Ive seen more than few expensive high fence tore up by hogs. But hey, thats how we got blackbuck and fallow on our lease so I aint complaining lol.

We should require everyone to install a cow catcher on the front of their car. People who elect not to install one will be taxed and people who's cow catcher is "too robust" will be taxed on the value above the government minimum. Those that cannot afford to install one, will have a cow catcher provided by the government.

    April fools!
    ...or is it? :(

This is genius. All vehicles in Texas should look like this anyway...

Hey I like my cow catcher, works good on deer. Hoepfully I never have to try it on a cow.

I hope the legislature buys out the owners and turns it into an Austin bypass. I'll bet the speed limit would drop though.

We need to just make toll roads illegal in the state.

Also, given the danger and negligence in setting the speed limit, I wouldn't mind seeing the road seized.

Spoken as someone with no fencing or livestock experience. Barbed wire ain't gonna keep 'em out, scooter - it takes heavy netting - and to have any REAL effect, it's gonna take netting with a lay-down panel to keep 'em from burrowing under it - similar to coyote fencing. Hogs ain't dumb - they'll learn to avoid the roadway over time, far better than any fence will ever keep 'em out.

I never said it'd be effective, I just said it'd be cheap, which seemed to be your biggest concern. Sorry for getting under y'alls skin.

Realistically, the best option would be to simply lower the speed limit for day travel, and enact a different speed limit for night travel (say, 65 and 40 MPH respectively, for example). And yeah, they'll learn to avoid the road eventually, but that's at least a few years off.

OR, instead of a liberal policy, with more government regulation where it doesnt belong, people could use their damn brain.
