So yesterday I wrote a really long post on home defense but it disappeared. So I'll try again, but less is more.

If your plan is grab my gun stop the bad guy, you need a new plan.

All of us know our homes but have you gone through your home with your go to gun finding all the places possible bad guys could be waiting?

Make sure to practice light control, changing your height, checking corners. Practice ascending and descending stairs if you have them. Make sure your spouse and kids know the plan so they don't freak out or worse put themselves in danger.

Run your plan so you can find flaws and become more confident. Get a buddy and some nerf guns and have him try to outsmart you. Use cover and concealment. Do jumping jacks or push ups to get your heart rate up, then run your plan.

I wanted to share this because this is something none of us can get wrong. LEO's and MIL guys train on this stuff for a reason and responsible gun owners can't just expect to pick up a gun and get it perfect without practice.

You will fall to your lowest level of training. The flat range is good but alone it can not fully prepare you to defend your home.

If you haven't watched the Legally Concealed YouTube channel I highly recommend it. He has great advice and tutorials.

    Stay safe, fight to win.

Not gonna clear my house. Nope. Going to lock ourselves in the upstairs master bedroom, armed to the teeth, flanked by our bigass dogs, call the cops... and wait. I'm not a member of SWAT so I won't try to act like them :)

I'm gonna make sure the wife and dogs are in the room with me and then proceed to turn the rest of the house into Swiss cheese.

We've actually had to clear our house twice, and a next-door neighbor and good friend's house once.

Thankfully, two of the three were false alarms and the third the guy was long gone by the time we got home, but you never quite know just how many hard to navigate areas and/or criminal-defensible choke points/ambush sites there are in your own house until you've had to run through it with a loaded shotgun, and you're trying to listen for footsteps or rustling noises over the sound of your own pulse beating in your ears.

I will say however, that even if they don't bite, a small, yappy wienie dog and a chihuahua work wonders for home protection -- the guy outside won't know they just like to bark, and they sound a lot bigger than they actually are.

Only had to clear the house once after coming home to find the door wide open. Not a fun thing to do.

Pretty sure it hadn't been latched good and just blew open. Nothing was missing but that is also what made me believe that someone may still be inside when I first looked in and saw TV,
    Etc still there.

Some of us aren't fortunate enough to have an upstairs, but thanks for being condescending.

I was poking fun at myself and attempting a bit of humor (notice the smiley at the end of the sentence) and not being "condescending". Don't get your panties in a bunch.

Fun way to find some spots that either you can use or the BG can use as a place of concealment is just play a game of hide and seek with the kids. They can get creative.

I don't know if I'd be startled or laugh my ass off if I found a BG hiding inside my kid's toy chest, my dogs' plastic kennel, or my wife's shoe cabinet... places where my kid loves to play hide and seek :)

We're all upstairs at night, and the view out the master bedroom door looks right down the only flight of stairs. If they stay downstairs then the insurance company buys me new stuff; if they make any move up the stairs, then it's on.

Do you have a laundry hamper, by any chance? That's my younger cousin's favorite spot for some odd reason.

On-topic, am I the only one who does a dry run of their house every couple days?

I think the standard recommendation for clearing the house is not to try. Gather in your safest spot, call 911, tell the dispatcher where in the house you are and that you are armed and waiting...and wait. If a bg comes into view, you "clear" the place where he is standing. You don't go looking for criminals.

That's what the experts suggest. There's no stuff the scum can take that the insurance money can't replace with something better! Except you. Make an armed stand behind the bed where you can send a hail of bullets at the door.

How about the sound of 6 chihuahua's in their "Tiny yet Mighty" group howl.

We cleared my buddies house one evening with him and his brother after finding the front door wide open.

If I never have to do that again, I'll live a lot longer. I swear that 10 minutes took 20 yrs off my life.
