We have coons in the attic here in central Texas. At first we thought they were squirrels until we put a security camera upstairs. Then I looked at the captain and said, "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

So far, they have laughed at the peanut butter, mangoes, and other non-meat products I've put in the trap. Was going to try canned cat food next, unless someone has a better suggestion.

I have pulled three out of mine in a year or so, sandwich meat has worked for me so far.
Only problem with shooting them there is I don't want to put a hole in my roof or somewhere else, lol....

Buddy of mine went through this. Somehow the coons were entering the attic through a chimney. Don't seem right but, it happened.
We set live traps on the roof each night and in a week or so we caught all of them then capped the chimney.
    Bologna worked best for bait.

Boil an egg and leave it out in the heat all day. When it's good and spoiled, crack the shell and bait the trap with the egg. You'll want to wire a cup into the trap so the raccoons can't reach in and bat it down to where they can get it.

Also, those "humane" traps are impossible to get a raccoon out of without the raccoon getting you. Voice of experience here. I've let freaked-out wild foxes out of those traps with no problems (not even a dirty look from the fox as it ran away), but raccoons turn into little buzzsaws full of hate when they're trapped and they will go after you. You'll want to "pacify" them with a .22 before you dump 'em out.

Impossible is a strong word. You just have to whisper to them.

I caught 2 (young) at one time.
I let them loose in the back of my sub-division.
After I saw a special on Discover ch. I started dispatching them as I caught them, anybody that KNOWS me
understands that is a very difficult thing for me to do.

I was leaving for work (0545) & saw them on my roof going in through the eaves.

Don't I wish. They're never there when I look, and it's 120+ in the attic during the day, so I don't stay long.
They're nocturnal so looking for them during the day is futile.

Dry cat food works fine for the country coons

Don't shoot 'em while loose in the attic. Chances are they'll end up some where you can't easily access to die, then you have a whole new set of problems.

Be diligent about removing them. A neighbor who's often gone for months on end had some in their house, @ $5K later all the repairs were done.

I'm on the fence about what to do with them post-capture. We have a couple of options. What did you learn from DSC?

Speak for yourself! Those photos were taken at 4 and 6pm. They're running around at all hours of the day and night up there.

I thought I could take them a little ways away & they would not come back, but they will return to where they stay if within a 5 mile or more radius.

It's been a while since I saw the special, but it was very interesting, they caught several & put tracking collars on them.
They pretty much kept a routine & went to all the same places all the time.
Very smart & able to get in to almost ANY place they want to bad enough, lol....

How can you look at those sad eyes and throw him out into the elements? Invite him down stairs where it's cool.;)
