Upfront...im not a collector. Guns are cool but mostly they are important tools/insurance. Im posting this here instead or the subforums for these guns as im mostly just thinking out loud.

Im down to needing a 22 rifle. Im thinking this "has" to be a 10/22. I just dont know which model but the barrel needs to be threaded. Do i need iron sights?

Need 1 shotgun. Im pretty well in between a Benelli M2/4 and the FN SLP. Beretta/Browning dont make HD guns?

Finally, 308 rifle territory. First need to decide bolt vs semi-auto and go from there. Do i need iron sights if i go bolt? Im bailing on the AR platform at the same time it seems to be exploding so instead of AR10 type im thinking FAL or perhaps M1A.

I count at last 6 guns right there.

You're comparing handloads to run of the mill x39 ammo. Hot x39 and standard x51 is another comparison you could try. Premium x39 ammo is the same price if not cheaper than premium hunting loads in .308. Are any AR-10s designed to handle a steady diet of quality .308 rounds? How bout even standard x51? I have not seen hardly any 5.45x39 ammo in the last year, I would not go AK-74.
44.2gr of varget under 150gr is far from hot, I run 44gr of varget under a 178, now that is warm. FGMM 175s run 2500 out of it, so a 50gr heavier bullet is still a couple hundred fps faster than the x39 with 123s. Judging from what hes getting fps wise 125s should run close to 3000 if you want compare apples to apples. x39 has nothing on 308 except cheaper for plinking, the rest is a wash for off the shelf finer ammo and should he ever get into reloading 308 is beyond easy to load for and secure components. Milsurp brass is everywhere, as well as actual milsurp ammo.

Not sure if youre serious about an AR-10 being able to handle 308 ammo. Not sure what you mean by standard x51, youre either shooting commercial 308 win or 7.62 nato pressure, either of which will fire out of modern AR-10s. 5.45 can be found pretty easily if you buy in bulk and are willing to look. My buddy just bought two cases from PSA a couple months ago. Kind of wonder if you even know what youre talking about with some of those statements, 5.45 in stock and at a good price

I'm trying to bring myself to sell off most of what's left of the guns my father gave me before he passed and get a G3/HK-91 type. They're fairly affordable, and stupid reliable.
My only shotgun is beat-up Mossberg 50 that rides in my truck, my handgun in a 1911.

I think you're selling yourself short if you don't at least consider an AR10 for your .308. Most of them can shoot 1MOA, only weight about 8lbs, and cost about a grand. Can't really get that combo out of any other .308 semi-auto. Not much sense in getting a bolt gun either considering the size, weight, accuracy, and cost of AR10s.

I don't have an AR10 however... ;) I'm a PTR91 fan, but also really like some of the newer M1A's. They are both heavier and a little less accurate than AR10s, tho.

So you already have a ak74, 13 mags and at least 4 spam cans of 7n6?
    Only 4?

I was referring to 7.62x51 NATO. And I was talking about the long-term use of it or .308, especially quality hunting loads, out of the AR-10 platform. Neither were designed for the 16" barreled semi-automatic rifles. Just saying you lose some performance. Personally I can't justify the added costs and the weight and durability issues for what you are ultimately getting. Not debating whether or not .308 is a quality round or whether it is all around better than 7.62x39. The insults, though, make you look like a jackass.

also, OP, you may want to consider the 930 SPX, and if you can find an older production year 10/22 ( mine is an 85' ) for better build quality.

Had a 930 SPX. Didnt run right.

Bought a 930 Home Security model, added extension and it didnt run right.

Done with Mossberg 930s. Thanks though.

I am increasingly appreciating very compact weapons so im thinking of picking up a Ruger Mark 3 with a long barrel instead of a 10/22. I dont know though, a 10/22 gives more accuracy and energy.

Shotgun, ive been considering a birdshead grip 870 to keep it compact or an FN SLP if i want to go full length semi auto.

308 rifle...ive been considering going with a Sig 556R (762x39) instead of 308 or an FAL.

Kind of all over the place i know so thats why right now im buying nothing at all. Looking is half the fun as they are all too expensive to shoot much once a guy buys them!

What didn't run right? I have a 930 that I haven't shot much so wondering. It's been fine so far.

You know, some guys have zero issues and swear by them and others have lots of problems.

930 SPX: would only hold 5 shells instead of 7 in tube. There was a massive lip on the stock Choate extension where either the shells or the spring would hang up. I ground it down but it still wouldn't run right. So I replaced that with a Nordic Extension. The mag feed problem went away but it wouldn't cycle reliably. I had a couple hundred rounds through it too. It would be fine on one range visit and not the next. So I really made sure it was clean and oiled in the right spots and it was still hit or miss.

930 Home Security: I thought I just got a "bad gun", so I bought a 4+1 home security model and built it up. I put a Nordic +2 on it and didn't have any mag problems. This one wouldn't release shells into the chamber, so I polished the shell stop. I found with this one, if I cycled Remington ammo more than a few times the shell rim would actually get deformed by the shell stop and not feed. I made sure my mag spring was a proper length and actually experimented with multiple lengths. I got it to run reliably for awhile by just not cycling ammo through it and avoiding Remington ammo. Then it started choking again. I noticed the piston spring (the heavy one inside the piston) was scraping the heck out of the mag tube, so I trimmed that down and polished the tube. It ran well for awhile, then started choking again. Well I'd never completely taken the piston apart and it was admittedly pretty fouled up. So I cleaned the heck out of that and it still was hit or miss.

There you go, that's my experience with Mossberg 930s. I don't rip on them, but i think their quality control is severely lacking. For a 3 gun shotgun, maybe they are great. All my guns are for defense first and range fun 2nd, so I have to have reliability.

Probably spent 1200/1300 dollars on those two guns with all the different parts, traded/sold them for probably half that. Moral of the story, I should have just bought an FN SLP or Benelli in the first place.

That being said, if you're happy with yours, cool! Glad it works. It is a neat gun, soft recoiling and fun to shoot. I have to say that I am done with Mossberg shotguns though. I can't even bring myself to buy a 500/590.

My current thoughts on rounding out my small collection.

    - Ruger SR22 or 22/45 (threaded) in lieu of a 10/22

    - Remington 870 with birds head grip in lieu of an FN SLP or Benelli M2

    - Sig 556R or Arsenal AK in 762x39 in lieu of a 308 such as an FAL, M1A or even Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle

My overall trend I'm embracing lately is compact and relatively short range.
