Oh no! Don't tell me Hillary was right: it was the Russians!

    Seriously.
How long is the "credit freeze" good for? I thought I heard on TV a couple days ago, it would only be for 30 days (at Equifax). Or is it in effect until you call them back and tell them to unfreeze it? If it's only for thirty days, I'm not sure how much good that will do...

It's permanent until you unfreeze it with the PIN they provide.

Speaking of the PIN... fucking Equifax's website crashed while I was doing the freeze with them and it never provided me a PIN. Their link to the instructions on how to get a replacement PIN are also not working. That's going to be fun later on...

I was concerned with that happening when it was posted about getting disconnected both online and over the phone. Let us know how the recovery works out.

Transunion has a free package where you can freeze/unfreeze online. Experian charges $11 for the freeze, but if I recall properly you can get a specific PIN for a specific lender upon request rather than having to unfreeze. No charge for Equifax freeze.

    Froze all three of mine.

Equifax did not charge me last week, nor did they ask for a CC.
Experian charged $10 and the payment has already cleared.
Transunion's, required a CC, and the charge of $10 has not hit yet, but they are also the only one's mailing something snailmail, so it'll probably be later this week when it hits.

Had you signed up for their online service, you could have avoided the Transunion fee. And had the ability to freeze/unfreeze your account online with no wait.

How long before we see a new credit crunch and stock market free-fall? I wonder if the housing market will also take a big hit...

I am signing up today - tell me how to get the deal you did, please.

I took oldag's advice (thanks, oldag) and for Transunion, it worked exactly as he described. Go to their website, read and follow the links they provide. Once you get signed up with them, you can lock your credit file with them immediately. The following day they sent an email, with a link, which will send one text notice to your cell phone if anyone tries to apply for credit in your name. This is also a free service (it's not their 'premium' service).

I also requested Equifax to lock my credit report (via their website). Their website appeared to process my request okay however it warned, "due to heavy demand at this time", it might take a week before I'd receive a confirming email. They also said be sure to check your junk mail filter (folder). So... I'm just waiting on word from the idiots who started this whole mess!

I don't have experience with Experian {yet}; probably will take care of them today.

    Experian Credit Reporting
Use this link for Experian (Add a Security Freeze) to initiate a credit reporting freeze for Experian.
    https://www.experian.com/freeze/center.html

Experian will not charge for freezing your report, DEPENDING on what state you live in. Texas = they charge $10.83 (incl sales tax); North Carolina = they don't charge. The site above will advise you if they charge or not.

For those who have had to freeze and thaw their credit before, is the thaw really a big pain or what?

I got included and am not happy about it. Had all my DL info, soc sec, etc. Started getting calls on Aug 2 about new credit lines. Everyone I have dealt with on the matter has been professional and courteous. I knew right away from the type of information had that it had to be a medical facility or credit bureau where my information was taken because nobody else has all my DL particulars. 10 days later, I learn about the breech. I have most of it squashed. Still dealing with a couple of issues. Joined Lifelock and that has been helpful as well. What a fricking pain!
