Sears WAS Amazon before there was an Amazon.

I remember waiting impatiently for the Christmas catalog and going with my mother to the store to used the phone on their counter to place a catalog order.

If they'd have embraced the internet - and technology in general - sooner, the only thing you think when you heard the word "Amazon" now would be a rain forest with a really big river.

    Gunz are icky.
Was reading an article a while back about Sears and their poor management decisions.
Sears management always demanded to own the actual store. They refused to lease.
As many shopping malls went down the drain they couldn't get rid of the stores. Nobody would buy a huge building in a dying mall.

Many have stated if Sears had embraced the Internet they would be doing just fine. I agree.
Problem is Sears management didn't want to be in the retail business. They wanted to be in the financial business. They mucked it up.

I don’t think offering financial services killed them.

They pioneered offering in-house credit for catalog purchases, which boosted sales for decades.

It also led Sears to create the Discover Financial (Discover Card) subsidiary. And they also created Allstate Insurance, which can also be seen as a financial vehicle.

These financial business units were eventually (and wisely) spun-off.

IMHO, from the reading I've done on it, the current CEO has done an excellent job of bleeding the corporation dry, extracting every bit of blood that he can to put into his real estate holdings company.

Not sure what his overarching plan is, but he's going to be one to watch. He's not stupid, as much as the media portrays him to be....He's got a plan....

I hated how when you bought something big from Sears. You had to go around the outside of the store to have a warehouse guy wheel it out. The process took a lot of time. Sears was the only store that did it. You'd feel like you were buying it twice. Once on the inside of the store and a second time, picking it up. My parents bought everything from lawn mowers to metal kitchen cabinets. I've hunted a ranch that had a Sears and Robuck prefab house. Delivered by horse and buggy.

Oh and lying about where some craftsman wrenches were made. While stamping them USA is a sign of the times.

    I'm gonna miss Sears.

With the Kenmore brand being up for sale now, I’m guessing the strategy is to liquidate the brands, sell off the real estate, exit the big box arena, limit the retail side to only the Sears Hometown franchise and the service to the Sears Home Services franchises.

Hired Sears Home Services when our washing machine went out, not only did their "repairman" misdiagnose the problem, he also ordered a very expensive and unnecessary part. I actually ended up fixing the issue by unplugging the device, waiting a while and powering it back up. They accused me of installing the replacement part (it was shipped directly to us) and I invited them to test both units to see if they were functional. They declined. My credit card company actually removed the charge for the maintenance call due to the incompetence of the "repairman."

That machine is still operating as it should and I for one will not shed a tear concerning Sears' demise despite also having memories of eagerly awaiting their Christmas catalog as a kid. As stated, this was an intentional effort to squeeze every ounce out of the brand before shutting it down. They failed to remain competitive, and paid the ultimate price...

We never did find out what happened to Roebuck.
    I suspect foul play.

    ;)

Actually, Alvah Curtis Roebuck passed in 1948...

Alvah Curtis Roebuck was born on January 9, 1864 in Lafayette, Indiana. He began work as a watchmaker in a Hammond, Indiana, jewelry store at age 12.

Roebuck later co-founded Sears, Roebuck and Company with Richard Warren Sears in 1891.

In 1895, Roebuck asked Sears to buy him out for about $20,000. At Richard Sears' request, Roebuck took charge of a division that handled watches, jewelry, optical goods, and, later, phonographs, magic lanterns and motion picture machines. His business interests did not end with Sears. He later organized and financed two companies: a manufacturer and a distributor of motion picture machines and accessories. Roebuck also served as president (1909–1924) of Emerson Typewriter Company, where he invented an improved typewriter, called the "Woodstock."

After several years in semi-retirement in Florida, the financial losses he suffered in the stock market crash of 1929 forced Roebuck to return to Chicago. By 1933, Roebuck had rejoined Sears, Roebuck and Co., where he largely devoted his time to compiling a history of the company he helped found.

In September 1934, a Sears store manager asked Roebuck to make a public appearance at his store. After an enthusiastic public turnout, Roebuck went on tour, appearing at retail stores across the country for the next several years.

Roebuck died on June 18, 1948 while visiting his daughter in Evanston, Illinois. He was 84 years old. He was buried at the Acacia Park Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.

When they finally announce the closing of our store in the Mall of Abilene, I will cry for hours......

    NOT

Sears was the last reason I ever had to go to the mall anyway, then years ago, when they started whoring out Craftsman hand tools to everyone and making them in China,...well If I want cheap chinese tools I can go to Harbor Freight

Sears has had nothing that I needed to buy for close to a decade now..

When Donald Keough (former Cocal Cola CEO) wrote his book
The Ten Commandments for Business Failure, I think that Sears set out to follow every last one of them..

    Bye...

Perhaps I'm just sentimental, but I'd hate to see Sears go away, even though the writing is on the wall.

I gave up on Montgomery Wards years ago and now wish we still had someone like them around. Of course I wish we still had the old Sears around too.

My lifetime alignment from Monkey Wards on my old pick up might be useless, but the TV I bought from them in the 80's still works just fine. And the stereo my dad bought from them in 71, then gave to me, that I've had hooked up in the barn, with a dirt floor, for the last 25 years, still works just fine too.

I don't want to talk about how many televisions and radios I've bought since then that have come and gone.

In the late 40's we wiped butt with pages from their catalog, mail ordered school clothes and shoes when you couldn't get them anywhere else, bought my first baseball glove, and worked in their Sporting Goods department in college during Christmas holidays. In recent years bought five, dual fuel stoves on sale, and Sears warehoused them for the three years it took to get the houses they were going in built.

    Going to miss them ..

We had a Sears catalog store growing up
They were an order center for everything in the catalog but they also sold big items like stoves and lawn mowers in the store IIRC

Monkey Wards, Woolworth's five and dime with the dining counter, Sears of old and K-Mart. Miss all of 'em. But, the strong survive and the weak, well...
