I get the calls about lowering the interest rate on my CC.
I sometimes answer the phone just to mess with them.
Got into an "argument" one time with the guy when I told him I don't carry a balance, & therefore interest rate doesn't matter.
He said I was lying & ended up hanging up on me, lol.

    Here is another trick:

Add names to ever call you want to hear. Dr Jones, Band of Dallas, Joe's Garage etc, turn on 'announce calls' if you fone has that option, I have had it for years on my fones, guessing most or all do today.

So I hear Dr Jones is calling or I hear "Unknown Caller". What I have done over time is filter out almost every call that comes in, I either know or do business with or I get the Unknown announcement.

Don, I was under the impression we're talking about phones people have in this century, like this:

    Not vintage items like that:

(I too thought talking caller ID was neat, for about 3 seconds)

The problem is they spoof numbers. I once got a phone call from a scammer with my own phone number to me. Opting out didn't work. So, I picked the most messed up music on Alexa and pushed 1 to talk to someone and left the phone on the speaker.

Though, I have had times when some poor bastard would call up and his connection was bad, and it was a legitimate call, so I said, well, if you don't want to talk F U and hung up.

Stupid people do stupid things sometimes. I remember when I had to go to the hospital for an ultrasound and brought my doctor's order, the fat lady at the counter said, I had to make an appointment, which in all the time I went there, never had to do that. I said, okay, how do I do that? She said, I don't know, that's your problem, go home and figure it out. Needless to say, I got my ultrasound the next day, and that lady doesn't work there anymore.
