After looking around - seems the 12g slug would cause even "Dirty Harry" to swallow his toothpick.
What's your favorite slug round in a 18" smooth bore defensive shotgun ????

#4 or #2 steel shot in a 2 3/4 high brass hull. Slugs are down and dirty plain mean. But they have the power to go through and through and then take on drywall and insulation without a problem.

Anything I'd want to use a slug on, I'd rather use a rifle for... Low recoil 00 buck is a great defensive load for a shotgun, tho.

Slugs are pretty devastating. I would only use one on something really big like a bear. For human defense, 00 buck will do fine. Magnum buck is pretty mean stuff. I've shot a lot of slugs and they are not good for defense, only for hunting.

I have Knoxx recoil reducing stock on my Mossberg. It works extremely well. The last shotgun school I attended we shot slugs all afternoon. It was like shooting a heavy bird shot. Very cool.

The Winchester 2 3/4" (1600 FPS) slugs work well on targets out to 400 meters. They will beat the heck out of you though.

I cast my own slugs (7/8 oz Foster) and load them to 1580 fps. I can keep 20 shot groups inside a sheet of legal paper (8 1/2" X 14") off hand at 100 yards. I pitty the fool that receives one.

You are the first person in Texas I know that casts and loads his own slugs. More power to you. And thats damn good accuracy too.

For my Mossy 500 I bought a 5 round box of Remington 385 gr sabot slugs, before doing research on the rifled barrel issue, and of course the morons at Carters never asked me about my barrel ( never going to buy anything there again for several reasons ). So can I use them in a smooth bore barrel?
And not at 200 meters - but at 1850fps seems they would make a good 1 shot option. Just wondering your thoughts.

    Thanks

Smoothbore. BUT, I did not say how big the target was.....I would demo slug accuracy at Camp Swift by hitting 100% on a truck at 400 meters on the M-203/M-79 range. I may not hit YOU at 400, but I will damn sure make you think twice about continuing your evil ways with 1oz chunks of lead sailing by!

The Box O' Truth #46 - Shotgun Slugs, Sabots, and Smooth Bore Barrels - Page 1

I believe you can, they just cost more. Besides, there are a bunch of slugs for sale in $4 and $5 boxes at academy.

I have shot some sabot slugs (Remington) at under 15 yards. They have some pretty amazing penetration, but they did not yet have the opportunity to destabilize. The Box-o-Truth confirmed what I had already believed...Sabots through a smooth bore are a waste of money. Since Texas allows rifles for hunting, sabot slugs and rifled barrels really have no place here. I'm kind of surprised they sell very many here at all.
