Conditions: Accuracy at 100 yards, no wind, factory stock, factory trigger, same shooter, same scope if not iron sights and so on.

*I know there are lots of different models, barrel lengths and factors, add them if it helps explain your answer. Criticize me if it's productive. I want to go with a Springfield Armory Scout Squad. I am trying to push myself and examine if this is what I really want and should do. Bonus points for folding stocks and iron sights (I know some don't have that). Here I'm focusing on real accuracy though. Say a 5-10 shot group, not in a lead sled, not bagged down, just real life shooting off of a pack or sand bag with good ammo (not handloads).

    308 rifles

    -Saiga
    -Vepr
    -FN FNAR
    -SCAR
    -PTR 91
    -FAL
    -Springfield Armory M1A
    -Remington 700
    -Ruger Gunsite Scout

Other entries, SAVAGE 10FCPK. Savage Arms Sadly I haven't had a chance to shoot 'er yet. Just finished mounting the optics last month then got busy on other side projects.

interesting, looks like savage discontinued it for 2014. well anywho, she has a 26" barrel, accustock, muzzle brake. I added lots of goodies including some custom made items. here's the cached google page. Savage Arms

IMO those rifles above varry to much. IE saiga and VEPR and FAL don't belong in the same category as the FNAR and the 700. You have both bolt action and semi-auto in the same category !

I can say a DSA FAL with an 18" barrel is lucky to do 1.5" groups with mil surplus ammo @ 100 yards / iron sights.

What do you REALLY want to do with the rifle? the above list is way too open, when you factor in barrel length, as you point out. The Springfield Armory Scout Squad looks like a nice gun and the M1A platform is on my eventual "to own" list. To me, the Springfield Armory Scout Squad is more of a "battle rifle carbine". hard hitting, closer combat situations. not particular winning awards for accuracy.

Valid point that my list has a wide variety. But i am trying to collect real data on that wide variety. You mention 1.5" for the FAL with milsurp ammo...to me that is excellent.

I dont want extreme accuracy. I know the Rem 700 probably wins on that and know they come in a wide variety as well. What i am trying to figure out is where the sweet spot is. Accuracy, weight, length, cost. I dont want to buy two rifles. One extreme and the other extreme. Im on an epic voyage for the most well balanced in all areas. Yes. I know swiss army knives are terrible saws but they can saw. Nice scissors too.

Here's a couple 100 yard 5 shot groups from my 20" Savage off a bipod and rear bag.

The last one was last weekend. I was having some epic mirage and the last two shots shifted low from some reason. I don't take pictures of all groups, but they all look like this...

Not sure if this is the kind of information you want but I have a Remington Model 700, varmint special in .308 that will group right at 1" with factory hunting 150 gr, and 3/4" with 175 gr. match ammo (@ 100 yds). It has a 30 year old Simmons 3-9x40 scope. The varmint special has a 24" bull barrel. I also have an Imbel FAL with a SUIT sight that will get only 2" at 100 yds. with the same 175 gr. Federal Match ammo. All this from sandbags on the calmest days, can't say "no wind at all". Hope this is the kind of information you are looking for.

Id like to be around $1500 although im not above a $500 gun or incapable of buying the $2500 gun but don't want to pay for 3/4" grouping. Just not my thing but i dont want some 8" gun either.

Some of my reloads. Notes point out that I jogged back from checking the target before launching the flyers...do'h.

This was from the bench at Hicksville. No sled, rear bag. Ammo was Winchester 168gr match. Shots on right edge of target (unmarked) were from another shooter.

The pic I posted is a little off. It shows an old Bushnell scope and rings from who knows where. I also added a break but it had no effect on accuracy and is in no way a necessity. Just makes it shoot really soft.

I agree - the FAL is a battle rifle, not a precision rifle. Here's my best group using Hornady SST 165gr bullets and 42.0gr IMR4895 through my 21" FAL:

First show low and left - the next 4 all clustered. Shot with a 9x scope at 100 yards, benched.
