    What is the rifle model?

Are we talking Remington 700, Savage 10, Rossi single shot break over?

Yeah, I looked in to getting my wife a .223 bolt gun and was disappointed by the twist rates offered.

They tend to market towards light weight varmint shooters.

It is very disappointing. My dad runs a sps light barrel coyote gun. I have yet to load for it yet since it will shoot the lead tip monarch stuff right at 1 moa.

I would think that 1moa would be accurate enough to take any varmint out to the effective range of the .223.
I have shot many crows and groundhogs with a rifle that would do about 1moa.
I think that most of the 1/2 moa groups people talk about on the forums were shot with the keyboard.

Most of the reviews for the rifle say it can shoot less than an MOA. This is with my Tikka 300 WSM from last week... I'm expecting a bit better than a 1" spread with the .223

What else have you tested? I assume you are a reloader given the pic above. How are you going about load development? Are you only using one powder type?

Not doing load development as I don't have reloading supplies for .223 and my hunting trip is a couple of weeks away. Using factory loads for this rifle. I've tried a couple of bulk loads that I use for my AR, but wasn't expecting fabulous results, and Hornady V-max 52gr.

Might try some of the offerings that use a different bullet. All of my rifles really like the Sierra and Nosler 224 caliber bullets.

Texas doesn't allow rimfire for game animals, no restriction for varmints.

Since this may be an issue for some to identify what is a game animal or not. There are a lot of animals that are considered non-game, most of what you may want to shoot/hunt. So rimfire is ok for stuff like Armadillos, Bobcats, Coyotes, Flying squirrels, Frogs, Ground squirrels, Mountain lions, Porcupines, Prairie dogs, Rabbits, Turtles, (and pretty sure pigs) etc.

The rimfire prohibition refers to them being banned for use on white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope (and of course migratory game birds).

For Eastern Turkey, rimfires are prohibited. Rio Grande Turkey are not.

was able to hit the range last night with various factory loads, and found that 60gr Nosler ammunition was able to produce the results I was looking for.
