    The things that will kill you quickest (besides your fellow humans) is:
    hypothermia - within a couple of hours, even in balmy Texas;
    dehydration - within 2 days
    starvation - within 2 weeks.

    Therefore, I want multiple ways to stay dry, warm, start fires (both to stay warm and purify water by boiling), and purify water by other means (filtering and chemicals). I'd rather carry tools and ammunition than food.

    I had a conversation with a friend about this after watching Book of Eli. If all systems are down then actual books will have a high value.

    Couple of things I can think of right now. One thing I think everyone should have is a wind up light/radio that also charges devices. Cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly for quick fire and/or little baggie of dryer lint. Some people use zipties, others won't. I personally think they'd come in handy. I'm in the process of putting mine together as well. I saw a recommendation after the walking dead, that condoms were good to keep things dry and hold water in.

    Choose MRE's (or similar) over canned food. Lighter, less bulk, and non-rigid packaging. Also, more calories to keep you going, a little more balanced than Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, and easier to warm up if you get a package of chemical MRE heaters. Just add water, drop the unopened MRE in, and in a few minutes you have a hot meal - no fire needed.

    Couple of things:
    fire starter can be had for free, just clean the lint out of the dryer and place in a ziplock.
    Don't underestimate something to keep up your morale. Cards, a book, a small pillow.
    Go on a walk with your pack to make sure it's comfortable.
    If you're packing for the lady in your life, don't forget "lady stuff".
    Have things to barter, I think alcohol, hard candy and cigarettes.
    Make sure things have multiple uses if possible- ounces equal pounds, pounds equal pain.

    Hey shooter. I was at work today when I saw a lot of wire laying around and thought it'd be a great item for my bug out bag and then was reminded of your thread. It is stainless steel wire, about 18 gauge and I collected it in spools of 15 feet. If you want one of em, let me know. Just pay the 3 or 4 dollar shipping and I'll send it out to you.

    I found some of those MRE heaters a while back. For $12 I have enough for a couple weeks of heating up food. The little stove things REEK! Good grief that stuff stinks. I bet you could smell it for a good distance. It was stinking up my garage so I put them in a large cottage cheese container to seal it up and contain the smell.

    I was finally able to get the suture material I wanted a while back. That was my last couple of items I felt I needed.

    I use a MSR Miox for backpacking and it's excellent. But the Life Straw is more affordable and a good option for someone that is hopefully never going to need to use it.
