The article has nothing to do with CCW. Its a guy who fire several shots, then ran through the TSU campus. At some point, he ditched his gun.

Agreed, what does this have to do with concealed carry? By the way, its legal to carry on campus, just not into any buildings or on any premises where a school event is taking place.

What's the final word on Campus Carry? I had a discussion with a student recently about it and have been out of the loop with having adopted a new baby boy. Last I heard we can carry concealed on campus but no in a bulding on campus. Is that correct?

Thats affirmative. Your vehicle, sidewalk, or parking lot are good to go.

I think he is saying this article is a reason for passing laws to allow for the carry of arms on campus.

I guess if you are not a college student, it's kinda hard to understand that. I could have made it more clear. I am a college student in a well known Texas University. One in a VERY bad neighborhood. People have been robbed, beat up, and sexually assaulted on the this campus. And obviously the "gun free zone" signs don't stop any criminals from coming on campus with guns. I carry my gun with me every single place I go, so why should school be any different? I can say this much, I am taking summer classes at HCC, and they actually have police officers, ARMED police officers, patroling the campus pretty heavily. So needless to say, there is some level of protection there. U of H, on the other hand, has an occasional guy in a "security" shirt, riding through on a golf cart, completely unarmed, smack in the middle of Houston...who cares if it is on a college campus, it's in the middle of a major metropolitan area, in one of the worst parts of the inner city. As for CCW on campus (needless to say, by people with a CHL, which can only be achieved if one is 21+) it's not necessarily about the danger you face when sitting in class, but once you walk out of class you are pretty much on your own, on a major city street in a bad neighborhood. Sometimes I have to park in 3rd ward and walk thru 3rd ward at night, to get to my car.

I haven't been out of school long myself so I understand the idea, just wasn't sure what you were getting at originally.

Colleges and universities actually hold the power here if I recall correctly, not the state. Each secondary school can make its own statutes on campus carry but most if not all Texas schools have chosen not to allow it. There was a pretty widespread movement attempting to change this when I was in school and I'm sure it is still going on. See if your area has a Campus Carry group and try to help advocate for a change.

Last session when before they killed the legislation, they had an article in the caller times, about it.

They actually interviewed a professor, who had a student (off duty officer) who was carrying. Some guy was harassing one of the female students. Anyway, class was the only way he could track her down. The guy showed up, something went down, and the armed student detained the guy, till the police arrived.

Hell yeah man, I go to UH main campus and one side of campus does have some shady looking neighborhoods. I have gotten an email where some girl was almost raped at a gas station near campus but she managed to escape. I feel unsafe just walking from SEC to Melcher at night.

Same here. Or walking from the UC Satellite area to Cullen and 45, at night (which is pretty much not even on campus anymore, you're talking about walking into Southeast Houston). Because sometimes that is the only place left to park.

You can always carry a tazer. I'm not saying we shouldnt be allowed to carry everywhere but if your going to let it bother you so much do something about it. There are other options... I'm sure you can get creative

Yeah a tazer might not be a bad idea. But man if I'm gonna spend $300 or so dollars on a weapon (being a college student constantly on a budget), a gun will always snag my interest first. And man, I took a summer class at HCC Central just this past summer block, let me tell you, I REALLY wish I could carry there. It is smack in the heart of the slum of Houston. Like skid row all around, seriously.

I went to HCC stafford, it's fairly new, and a nice campus. UH doesn't seem too bad, except for those ghetto houses around it and near wheeler by the ghetto parking lot around SEC and Hoffheinz... third ward???

That is pretty close. Schools cannot make atatutes. State law prohibits the carry of firearms on the premises of schools "unless pursuant to written regulations or written authorization of the institution".

The end result is if the school has a written rule that carry is allowed, then it is not off limits.

So in other words, if U of H or HCC wanted to allow me to carry my gun into the classroom, then it would be perfectly legal?

The community college i went to on the NE side of Houston allowed me on 3 occasions but it was for "historical instruction". I was allowed to bring in firearms from different historical periods for visual aids and hands on experience when the history department was having lectures on different wars. Because of the value of the collection i was allowed to carry my personal weapon and the campus officers escorted me to and from the lecture hall and my vehicle.
