Colleges aren't the morality police on something that is legal. This is another shot in the culture war and demonizing a legal activity.
Pointing the gun at the camera (hopefully no one was holding it) is a separate issue that needs to be addressed with training but really is irrelevant to what the college did. They might use it as a convenient excuse but they bounced her because she was a black person posing with a gun and a "mean look".
At least their trigger finger discipline was spot on.
