Here are a couple that my friend owns.
All we know is that they came as a set of three and he owns all three.

I don't know if they came as a set but the top one appears to be a 1911A1 and the bottom a 1911. Both could be military issue that someone did engraving on and aftermarket grips. I don't really know. There is a web site that can tell you when they were made by the serial numbers. It is possible that they are some sort of commemorative but don't look like any I have ever seen. Both appear to have be refinished at some point although the top one may just have had the finish mostly removed. It has some freckleing which makes me think it predates any of the commemortive 1911s that colt produced int the 60s and 70s.

I am no expert but there are experts at 1911forum.com try the Colt forum there.

I should have mentioned in the original post that all three are John Wayne commemarative .45s. They came in individual boxes for display, my friend still has all three. I'm getting the serial numbers from both of them and will go from there. The stainless model has been shot many times over the years, but the blue model has never been fired. the handles and engraving were from colt.

I'd still go to the 1911 forum.
They will be able to answer your questions. As far as I am concerned it is the premier site for 1911s
