About a year ago, I was at Academy buying ammo (I know, shocking, huh?), checking out, the total comes to around $75.
I give the cashier a $100 bill, she keys in $1000 and then realizes her mistake and calls the manager.
"I tell her, (just give me the change for $100, you know, $900 less than what the change shows on the display and it will be correct".
You would have thought I was telling her how to construct a particle accelerator. Just got the deer in the headlights look, and it was if her brain needed to be rebooted since it was stuck in a logic loop.

    I weep for humanity.

To be fair for her - that sort of discrepancy is logged, and she could get accused of stealing the difference. My wife spend a big part of her career in retail work, a lot of cashiering, and they take matching the till to the drawer very, very seriously most places. From the customer side, you're spot on as far as getting change back, but her till is still going to record the extra $900 and unless she explained it the manager would probably jump her.

No, her till would still be accurate. If she had given me change for $1000, then it would be off.

I went to the fast food place drive-thru today for a quick bag of lunch.

At the speaker the order taker says that will be $4.82 at the window.

When I get to the window I hand him the four dollar bills and eight dimes and two pennies. He says "is that exact change" ? I (can't believe the question) said "what?". He repeats "is that exact change" ? I say "yes". Then he gives me my lunch and I go away puzzled.

There's a first time for everything, but I don't understand this one at all.
Nicer than me. Tell him to count it and find out.

Once the transaction was logged, even being incorrect, getting her manager covered her for it, which quite likely the manager also made a reference of he incorrect transaction amount.

    CYA always.

Some years ago, I was in a store in Virginia. We were there for a wedding that I've long since forgotten. We went into some sort of a store that was like a local version of Target to buy some small items and when we went to check out, all the registers were backed up about 10 or 12 deep. Standing there I noticed that one line was moving way better than any of the others, so I moved over to it. It was easily moving 3 or 4 times faster than the others. When we got to the register, the girl rang up my stuff and looked at me to tell me the total. That's when I realized that she had Downs Syndrome. I paid and she gave me the correct change with a smile and began checking the next customer. As I left I noticed a manager standing there and I went over and complemented the young lady. He told me he wished he could clone her. All the other checkers were too busy bitching about their jobs or watching the clock to see when they'd get a break, and most of them always had trouble with shortages because they messed up giving change (or were stealing.) She was proud to have a job and it made her happy when customers smiled or gave her a compliment.

This happened well before the current generation was born. Those of us who grew up having to work in order to have any money have a really difficult time feeling much sympathy, and certainly no empathy. (I had a newspaper route when I was in 4th grade.) Our school systems have dumbed down education to make sure that when these kids get old enough to vote, they are totally helpless and have no idea what socialism and communism have done to destroy lives.

Someone remarked about getting 8 dimes. The other night I emptied the change in my pocket and I had 18 dimes in it from getting change from different clerks in their 20's.

One time, at least 20 years ago, I stopped at a 7-11 in Watauga to get a 12 pack. When I went in the store seemed a little dark but I didn't think anything of it. I got a 12 pack and IIRC it was $8.50. I set it on the counter to pay and the late 40-ish looking woman said she couldn't sell it to me because the power was out. So I asked why and she said the register figures the tax. So I said it just multiply 8.50 by 8.25 (I think that may have been the tax back then) and that will give you the tax. She said she didn't know how to do that. Smh, so I left a ten and took the beer.

Tax is easy - if its 8.25% take your whole number - 8.50 x 1.0825 = 9.20 (rounding down since its actually 9.20125, but we don't have 1/8th of a penny coins)

I bet she had a smart phone - but then again - powers out, register can't log the transaction, she'd probably got instructed not to sell anything till power came back on because of the till thing.

I frequently pay cash for gas since my card has been compromised at pumps. Often I'll grab something to drink and tell them to put the rest on whatever pump I'm at. Several times I've gone out to pump gas and had an even dollar number like 16 bucks after handing over a 20. I know what ever drink I had came out to an uneven dollar figure requiring change. The people working the gas station are to lazy to get the total and just type in an even number to save them from doing math. Which always shorts me. I don't care if it's only 7 cents short. I want that 7 cents in gas. I'll go back in everytime just to make them figure it out. I can do that simple math right at the register in my head when I see the total. I'm pretty sure if they just type in the the correct amount I gave them the register will do the rest.

I've had a plenty of experiences like the ones outlined in this thread, occasionally moaning on TGT about them as in here and here.

Try paying with a two dollar bill. Sometimes they try to give you change for a twenty.
I love two dollar bills. They have some wonderful applications. :)

In '98 or so, I was at Home Depot in Oxon Hill, MD - just outside of DC. I handed the clerk a $10 for a five dollar purchase and she handed me back $95 in change. I tried to give back the extra money but she ended having to call her supervisor because she was adamant that I was wrong. That was the last time I bothered with it in that area.

Between poor or non-existent customer service that (and the surrounding areas), I got to the point where I would only check to be certain that they gave me at least as much as I was supposed to get back. Otherwise it was not my problem.

If the tax is 8.25%, you multiply $8.50 by 0.0825 to get the tax. Which is .70, and brings the total to $9.20.
