It's unclear about where the hatchet was. If it was in the shoplifters right hand I'm good with what happened. If not, I can't see myself pulling the trigger on the guy

Seems pretty clear that the hatchet was stuffed in his pants.

That said, I have no pity for the shoplifter.

I don't have any warm fuzzy feelings for a thief, and I would bet the store owner had some built-up frustrations over a lot of shoplifters but he may be in a bit of a bind

All depends on where the criminal's left hand was located relative to the hatchet.

Could be tough if the hand was nowhere near the hatchet.

If the video stops just before the shots were fired hands aren’t near hatchet.

I’m not saying the shooting was legally justified. Just that when you steal, resist being detained by the person you stole from, and then get holes poked through your organs...I have a hard time feeling bad for you.

Don’t think I would make the same decision as the shop owner though. He has a tough road ahead of him.

I don't have any sympathy for the thief either, but I'm not sure I could call the shooting justified. The guy was surely trying to leave, so I'm not sure how the "fear for my life" factor plays.

    Gunz are icky.
    Bad shoot.

    Shooter wasn't directly threatened.
Dead guy was trying to evade. Shooter impeded him.
Shot fired while thief moving away from shooter.
    Video of event.

    Shooter gonna get loved tenderly.

    Guns aren't magic wands.
Pointing them at people doesn't just suddenly make them obey.

I'm afraid you're right. I don't see any path to self defense on this one.
