Four. All VW 4-cylinder engines, from the earliest air cooled through the water cooled gassers and TDIs in the early 2000's have 4 bolts holding the engine onto the transaxle.

Yes but I remember my dad trying to find a 15mm socket or wrench to work on the air-cooled VW engines. If you think losing a 10mm is bad, try finding a 15mm - back in the 60s.
