    Eh, I used to have a VW Scirocco with a 1:10 compression ratio that did need premium, and the wife always glared at me when she was around when I got gas.

    Well, there's recommended and then there's required. It's worth noting that when the manufacturer recommends premium for the US market, they really mean 91 octane as that is "premium" in many states. If the car is stock and naturally aspirated you can put 89 in it with no issues, and probably even 87 as the engine management will actively de-tune to what's in your tank (assuming it was built in the last 15 years or so).

    Some cars definitely do require it, tho...
