Some of us don't have the choice. Private school is expensive and so is home school. Before you start blaming people for things they can't counter perhaps you should consider the reason the kids are still there.

Exactly. Glad I'm not the only one. I'm doing well to keep them in new shoes, much less shelling out thousands of dollars for a private education.

Some of you won't like this however, you conservative parents that send your kids to government schools are part of the problem. You have an awareness of the liberal agenda in the public schools and yet still send your kids there, naively thinking your school district is different. It is not. The few waking hours a day that you have with your kid is not enough to over ride 30 or more hours a week of government school input.

You'll get flamed for this...but you are mostly correct. There are indeed some good school districts and good teachers. Typically small and rural and being consolidated into bigger districts. We SHOULD be able to use the public schools and the kids should come out of that schooling well educated and on a good moral footing. However, in many cases for different reasons, the public schools are unusable. Many people do preach conservative beliefs but take the government hand outs or the poor services provided in return for a large portion of our income being confiscated.

Some people genuinely don't have a choice due to their short term financial situation.

However, for every one person who truly doesn't have a choice there are probably 100 who aren't willing to sacrifice a little lifestyle to provide their kids a better education. (I'm not directing this at anyone here as I certainly don't know your financial position or other concerns)

Many folks could indeed afford private school IF they cut down on their lifestyle, bought a smaller house, didn't drive ridiculous vehicles, didn't get loans on motorcycles and boats, didn't take vacations and just lived more simply. Same thing with people who say "my wife can't stay home with the kids, she has to work". Sure that's true in some situations, but really what people are saying is, "she can't stay home, because we've got all this sh*t to pay for that we want but don't really need."

It's about priorities and sacrifice. Most folks do not want to sacrifice and their priority is themselves. That's real talk and that was me for a long time so I know what I'm talking about.

Hell some of us are still renting. I cannot afford private school or home schooling. My wife has to work or we would be screwed. I have been impressed so far with the public schools here in Texas. I am tired of them asking my daughter to sell to raise funds. We would love to send her to private school. But we would also like to own a home. The best thing we can do is be involved.

Also, this is your situation right now. It doesn't mean it will be in 2-3 years. If it's a priority and a goal, eventually you'll find a way. I live in Austin where people live like money falls from trees. I don't know how they do it. So I sympathize with those who struggle financially, because compared to these folks living in the hills with luxury cars, I struggle too. But then I see the poor folks on the East side and that is genuine poverty and struggling.

My point is though, right now is just a snapshot in time, things do change and can get better. Stay out of debt, live simply and try to get your income up.

Life is hard. I get that, but we can't paint ourselves as victims. I don't have what a lot of the folks in Austin do, but I am doing things with my money that they are not.

What happened to reading, writing, and arithmetic? Now it's tolerance, obedience, and guilt.

No wonder you have school kids offing themselves and others every chance they get.

    That's exactly my point!

We need to DO something about it. Get our side out to vote. Get our kids out of their schools and on and on.

I moved from a socialist state where I had a cushy job to live in a state with more freedom. It's not just lip service, we can't just keep talking at each other. We have to live it.

If any of you all are considering homeschool or a Christian or private school, look into it, reevaluate your lifestyle, squeeze your budget until it screams and get your kids out of the indoctrination centers. If it's not an option financially right now, work towards that goal and make it happen.

I'm very encouraged by the recall election in Colorado. That is exactly what our side needs to do in all states. There are plenty of conservatives in blue states, even in the cities, they just need to get out to vote and see that we can change this messed up government.

    Ok. Enough about "their schools".

They are OUR schools. Frankly, I know teachers in the public school system. I go to church with two of my kids' teachers. The advanced learning teacher for the elementary school lived across the street from us. Her husband is an FFL. Even though my youngest is now in middle school we still consider them neighbors and friends.

One of the teachers at our church came up through the youth group and now teaches at the local high school where my oldest son goes. The other teacher, who also has my son in her class, is married to the pastor of the church. Pastor's kid is a teacher at a different high school. That's three teachers I know personally. All are hard-working, love the kids, and put in extra time and effort teaching even though they deal with some bad kids and bad parents.

Yes, there are some bad teachers even in the Texas schools. We have dealt with our fair share of burn-outs or teachers that just seem to hate kids. Fortunately, we don't have a teachers union down here and by staying involved we have managed to have some say in our kid's selection of educators. By being involved and getting to know the various people working in the schools we have learned that the system can work for you.

Teaching is like any profession. There are some bad ones, some good ones, and a bunch of mediocre ones. You are besmirching a lot of good people with your constant bashing of the public school system.

School in Chicago does NOT equal School in Texas. The article was about schools in Chicago.

Just remember, WE don't like it when gun grabbers talk about how people who own guns have mental problems, have small penises, are racists, etc. etc. What you are saying is no better than the people that routinely target us.

+1 from a guy raised by teachers, and married to one.

The problem isnt good or bad teachers, the problem is what it is they are to teach. Sex ed in general use to be something you could as a parent opt to keep your child out of but over time parents have lost that right. School's attitude about it now is "you choose to have your children in public school, you give up the right to say what they do or dont learn in public school". Now sex ed has gone from High School, to Jr High, to upper Elementary, now all the way down to Kinder. I am a teacher but I have chosen to teach at a private school because I cannot abide to road our public schools are going down. Yes there are great teachers within the public school system but the system itself is what is flawed.

Exactly, a lot of teachers who are nice people and perhaps somewhat conservative personally act as "Good Germans" and just "go along to get along" in their school or district.
