    My dad always said that if you carried a handgun to protect yourself against the grizzlies, you needed to file the front sight off of the handgun. Thay way, when the bear takes it away from you and shoves it up your arse, it won't hurt hurt nearly so badly.

    Your opinion; but because I did not have the benefit of your wisdom on the subject when I went to Alaska with my son, I had to rely on what the experts in the field indicated (including Alaskan bear hunting guides, bear hunters, Alaskan fish & wildlife folks, biologists and so forth - I did quite the bit of research before our trip). What they said was that bear spray is the most effective in deterring bears from attacking. Does it work every time, no it does not. Does a 44 MAG or a 12 gauge slug or a 30-06 work every time - no they do not. Yet, as I said, we also carried a 44 MAG and a long gun when out and about where bears might have been encountered. We tried to cover all the bases. I also wore better running shoes than did my son and had a small caliber pistol to kneecap him just in case.

    By the way, you show a video to support your opinion that bear spray is not effective but yet the bear spray DID EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO DO AND TURNED THE BEAR AWAY FROM HER. Who gives a shit what it did to the kayak. What she should have done was backed off instead of acting like a moron and remaining in the danger zone. She was lucky it was only the kayak and not her that was destroyed but had it not been for the pepper spray in the first place it may well have been her.

    Same way cops tell women that whistles , screaming and shitting themselves is the most effective way to stop a rape.
    Ever wonder why this kind of advice is given?
    You of all folks should have a pretty good understanding of the concepts of gross vs fine motor skills under stress. Would you whip out the OC on a subject that was an immediate threat to your life or health, or would you go to an option that has better odds of stopping the threat.

    If you have the luxury of seeing the bear that has decided you are food then you have used up your good luck for a while. Avoid casinos and lottery tickets.

    You are aware that the OC you carried on duty is about 2-3x more potent than anything sold as “bear spray, right?

    Carrying a rifle would be less effective for defense as ;
    1. If attacked you probably would not see it coming and;
    2. If you are grabbed, the rifle will be about as worthless as tits on a nun for defense. Big bore pistol can be effectively wielded with one hand

    I'm not sure if any of you have heard of Steven Rinella. He has an outdoor show on Netflix called The Meateater

    He has spent more time hunting in bear country than any of us ever likely will

    He was on Afognak Island with some guys hunting and they were hiking back to the site of their previous days kill to get meat they hung in a tree where they were attacked by a Alaskan Brown Bear

    They did 2 podcast on the event. This is the link to part 2 , where they cover the attack

    What's interesting is they discuss in depth the need to have your bear defense ready and not in your back pack.

    Get a big magnum revolver. The odds of you being attacked by a bear are pretty low. I have been fishing Alaska for the last 20 years, I missed three years for the birth of grandkids. Anyway during all that time I have encountered a bear less than half a dozen times. Each time the bear just wanted to go fishing. Give them a wide berth and you are fine. Do not get between a sow and cubs. Lastly carry a change of underwear. You will need to change after you have your encounter.

    In reality if you are going fishing the bears only want to fish too. Depends on how remote you plan to be. I have fished the Kenai river and there are so many people a bear sighting is as rare as hens teeth.

    Great replies! Thanks for the info on the revolvers. I saw the recommendations for the Alaska revolver but they are a bit pricey....not like I am going to live there; or die there for that matter.

    Punch II MK IV streamer. My choice for people and I kept a fogger for animals. Both are the gift that keeps on giving.

    40mm muzzle blast would be preferred for animals of all kind but it's not carry practical.

    115 gr Barnes solid copper hollow points in 9mm for two legged vermin and 316 gr Belt Mountain Punch Solids in .454 Casull for four legged apex predators that might confuse me for food. Never take half measures;)

    Well.
    I thought we were talking gas there.

    I prefer 12 gage slugs, if im expecting trouble. Half measures indeed.

    Kind of hard to maneuver a 12ga into position to be effective when you are being shaken in the jaws of a 1000lb bear that has hit you from behind at 35mph;)

    At that point it's not really upto you anymore. Fate may favor the prepared or bold but it's still a crap shoot then.

    While I would most likely be shooting crap, I would also be doing my level best to be shooting 1896 grains of unadulterated hate in 316 gr increments into the bitey end of whatever has decided I looked tasty.

    I hope you win.

    Well with my.luck I would get in a lucky shot with my knife at the back of the throat killing the bear only to have him collapse on me and suffocate me.

    This thread ties in nicely with Hoji's quote in my signature.

    Yes but then you'll have an awesome revolver as a memento from your trip.
